PowerUp! Austin shares ideas on the art of raising capital

Posted on 06/29/2017 by Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce

More than 70 Austin Chamber members eagerly waited in the lobby of Bank SNB to receive advice on one of the most important topics that could help their business—how to access financial capital.

“There is an art involved in negotiating financial dealings,” said Ed Curtis of Bank SNB. “From raising capital to the different phases of meeting with potential investors, all of those things are very important.”

From multi-dollar companies to small startups, funding is the lifeline of a successful organization. The guest speaker, Joel Trammell, CEO of Khorus, shared his advice on how companies can secure funding from potential investors.

“No matter how many times you have been successful, it is never easy to raise money, “said Joel Trammell, CEO of Khorus. “Some people will like your ideas and some people aren’t going to like your ideas. But what matters a lot is who your partners are.”

Trammell shared his story of starting his first bootstrap startup, Prodigy. His funding wisdom to companies: consider investors that match what you want to achieve, are able to follow along with your vision, have deep pockets, and are dependable investors who will not bail when things go wrong.

In addition to the conversation, the event featured an interactive roundtable discussion where members asked questions about how to generate funding through personal savings investments, borrowing funds, bank financing, networking with seed investors, and ways to secure venture and private equity. Roundtable speakers included Jason Seats of Techstars Ventures, Claire England of CTAN, Travis Brodeen of Newchip, and Mike Varozza of Waterloo Swim School.

Created by the Austin Chamber, the PowerUp Austin! Series is a monthly conversation designed to keep the busy professional informed of the many ways they can navigate their company in the Central Texas business climate. The event was the fourth of a series of business discussions lead by small and large company owners.

The event was sponsored by Bank SNB.

The next PowerUp Austin! will feature guest speaker Joshua Sutin of Dykema Cox Smith as he discusses employee benefits and why your company should care. The event will be held Thursday, August 24 at UFCU from 2:00-5:00 p.m.
