For many years, the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce has encouraged local companies to take advantage of state training incentives, such as the Skills Development Fund, provided by the Texas Workforce Commission.

Recently, Austin Community College in partnership with various manufacturing companies was awarded $425,797 to create training programs that benefit Central Texas residents. The last time the grant was awarded was in 2015 to St. David’s Medical Center and Visa.

“The Austin Chamber is pleased to see that the Texas Workforce Commission has granted $425,797 through the Skills Development Fund Grant to benefit workers in the Austin metro area,” said Kwee Lan Teo, Vice President of Talent Development and Acquisition of the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce. “This partnership grant with the Austin Community College will provide 408 Central Texas residents with the tools they need to succeed in electronics, pneumatics, and robotics while offering them an average wage of $20.43.”

Since 1996, the Skills Development Fund Grant has created more than 342,428 jobs throughout Texas and has assisted 4,238 employers with customized training needs. During the 2016-2017 Legislature, $48.5 million was allocated to the fund. This latest partnership will be between Austin Community College and five manufacturing companies including 3M, Applied Materials, Athena Manufacturing, KoMiCo Technology, and TASUS Texas Corporation.
