  • Approximately 40,400 Available Job Postings during the monthly reporting period, a decrease of 3,800 postings compared to the same period last year. 
  • Largest year-to-year decreases in the Computer and Mathematical Occupations, followed by Office and Administrative Support Occupations, Sales and Related Occupations and Healthcare Practitioners and Technical Occupations.
  • Companies such as HeartFlow, Crime Tech Solutions, Blueshift, Axa Advisors, Wonderwall Studio, TrueCar, Ride Fare, Luminex Corp., Lightspeed Systems, ePatientFinder, Duo Security, Dominion Payroll Services, Certain Affinity, Baker Tilly and Automic Software have recently announced new location or expansion plans in Austin.

There were approximately 40,400 Available Job Postings during the July 2016 monthly reporting period. About 7,000 or 17 percent of the available postings during the July reporting period fell under Computer and Mathematical Occupations.

The Huffington Post ranked Austin 5th on the "Main Reasons Millennials Are Moving To These Cities". The Wallet Hub ranked Austin 9th on its 2016's Most Educated Cities". Austin is also the 4th on the list of "U.S. Cities for Raising Startup Capital", according to Tech.Co.

According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin MSA reported an unemployment rate of 3.3% or 37,200 unemployed in June 2016. The Austin MSA reported an annual job growth rate of 4.0% or 38,400 net new jobs in June 2016, making Austin the 4th fastest growing major metro in the nation.

Approximately 65% of unemployment insurance (UI) claimants that are actively seeking a job in Travis County have less than an associate's degree, according to Workforce Solutions Capital Area.

The total number of Available Job Postings was roughly 31,800 in July 2012 and have risen to 40,400 in July 2016. Of the 40,400 job postings, about half are new Job Postings.

Executive Secretaries and Executive Administrative Assistants made it to this list in July 2016. The University of Texas System, Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Ascension Health, Texas State University, Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Department of Insurance and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality have posted for Executive Secretaries and Executive Administrative Assistants positions. 

About 340 or less than 1% of the available job postings, not reflected in this report, are for internship positions. The top internship postings are for ElectriciansPublic Relations Specialists, Registered Nurses, Market Research Analysts and Marketing Specialists, Plumbers and Web Developers. The occupational group, Construction and Extraction Occupations, posted the most internship positions.

The Computer and Mathematical Occupations saw almost 1,000 less available job postings compared to the same period last year. Software Developers, Applications and Computer Systems Analysts saw most of the decrease in postings.

The San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont MSA, Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta MSA and Denver-Aurora-Broomfield MSA all have a higher hiring difficulty in this occupational category compared to the Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos MSA while Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue MSA and Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown MSA have a lower hiring difficulty.

Registered Nurses remain the top occupation in both the region and in healthcare. The Healthcare Practitioners and Technical Occupations did see a year-to-year decrease in available job postings but the decrease is considerably less than Computer and Mathematical Occupations, Office and Administrative Support Occupations and Sales and Related Occupations. Only Hays County and Bastrop County saw a year-to-year increase in available job postings in this category.
