INSIGHTS

  • Approximately 41,500 Available Job Postings during the monthly reporting period, a decrease of 5,300 postings compared to the same period last year. 
  • Largest year-to-year decreases in the Computer and Mathematical Occupations, followed by Healthcare Practitioners and Technical Occupations, Office and Administrative Support Occupations and Sales and Related Occupations.
  • Several companies recently announced new location or expansion plans in Austin, involving more than 1,700 jobs. There were approximately 41,500 Available Job Postings during the August 2016 monthly reporting period, a decrease of about 5,300 Available Job Postings compared to August of 2015. About 7,000 or 17 percent of the available postings during the August reporting period fell under Computer and Mathematical Occupations.

USA Today ranked Austin 9th on the "American Cities Adding The Most Jobs". The Kauffman Foundation named Austin 1st in the "Top 25 Cities For Startup Activity, 2016". According to CBRE, Austin is ranked 5th in the "Scoring Tech Talent" list for 2016.

According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin MSA reported an unemployment rate of 3.6% or 39,800 unemployed in July 2016. The Austin MSA reported an annual job growth rate of 3.9% or 37,800 net new jobs in July 2016, making Austin the 3rd fastest growing major metro in the nation. Professional and Business Services added the most jobs (7,900 or 4.9%) in the past year. The fastest growing industries are Construction and Natural Resources (12.1%) and Wholesale Trade (8.9%).

Approximately 65% of unemployment insurance (UI) claimants that are actively seeking a job in Travis County have less than an associate's degree, according to Workforce Solutions Capital Area.

Note: The data for August 2016 would be the sum of all posted ads from July 14, 2016 to August 13, 2016. This reference period is aligned to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) unemployment job search time period to provide a more accurate comparison of labor supply and labor demand.

The total number of Available Job Postings was roughly 32,700 in August 2012 and have risen to 41,500 in August 2016. Of the 41,500 job postings, about half are New Job Postings.

First-Line Supervisors of Retail Sales Workers, First-Line Supervisors of Food Preparation and Serving Workers, Management Analysts and Maids and Housekeeping Cleaners were the few occupations that saw a slight year-to-year increase in postings.

About 340 or less than 1% of the available job postings, not reflected in this report, are for internship positions. The top internship postings are for ElectriciansRegistered NursesPublic Relations Specialists, Market Research Analysts and Marketing Specialists and Pharmacists. Companies like Walmart have posted internships for Pharmacists while several non-profit organizations have posted for Public Relations Specialists. The occupational group, Healthcare Practitioners and Technical Occupations, posted the most internship positions.

The Computer and Mathematical Occupations saw almost 1,500 less Available Job Postings compared to the same period last year. Software Developers, Applications, Web Developers and Computer Systems Analysts saw most of the decrease in postings. Approximately 90 percent of the postings under this category are for full-time positions.

Companies such as DELL, IBM, Amazon,ACCENTURE, VisaGeneral Motors CorporationCharles Schwab Corporation, The University of Texas SystemsApple, Inc., and Deloitte have posted for positions under Computer and Mathematical Occupations.

Both the Denver-Aurora-Broomfield MSA and Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington MSA have a higher hiring difficulty in this occupational category compared to the Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos MSA while Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue MSA and Nashville-Davidson-Murfreesboro-Franklin MSA have a lower hiring difficulty.

Registered Nurses remain the top occupation in both the region and in this category. Surgical Technologists saw the largest year-to-year increase in postings. Approximately 77 percent of postings under this category are for full-time positions.

Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and Certified in Nursing Administration (CNA) saw an increase of 100 or more postings year-to-year. There was a significant increase in the postings for Associate Science of Nursing (ASN) due to an increase of job postings for traveling nursing jobs.
