Throughout the last 18 months, TxDOT has been meeting with the public to gather feedback on the design of all three sections of the Capital Express Project. The new, modified alternative 3 lessens the impact on displacements along the corridor, accommodates at least 8 "cap" locations, a bike & pedestrian bridge only crossing at Woodland Avenue, and a "boulevard" on the west side of IH 35 beginning at 8th street. These accommodations are drawn from extensive meetings with community members.

In partnership with the TxDOT, the City of Austin is undertaking a feasibility study for a series of “cap” locations along the central corridor. A cap is a deck covering the roadway below, which provides additional green space for many different community uses. Preliminary cost estimates show the full project will be approximately $500M (structure and systems) and $300M (surface amenities). That cost estimate does not include operations and maintenance. Through its partnership with TxDOT, the Cap and stitch project will be incorporated into its NEPA process and has been included in the design and construction contract (if funded).
