Insights

Due to a comprehensive revision of the HWOL Index and HWOL Data Series, there will be changes in the volume as a result of this revision. The majority of the change in volume was caused by the removal of the bulk of the anonymous ads. Please note that the HWOL Data Series has been revised back to January 2015.

Job Postings measured in this report refers to the employers who are actively advertising online, it is not a representation of Job Openings, which measures all positions that are open (not filled) on the last business day of the month.
There were approximately 56,800 Available Job Postings during the September 2020 monthly reporting period, an increase of 1,000 postings compared to the previous month. There were 24,100 New (first-time) Job Postings in September 2020, representing 42 percent of Available Job Postings.
15 percent or about 8,700 of the Available Job Postings during the September reporting period fell under Computer and Mathematical Occupations. There were 3,300 New (first-time) Job Postings for Computer and Mathematical Occupations, most were for Software Developers-Applications. Personal Care and Services Occupations are now in the Top 10 Occupational Groups with the highest job postings, mostly for Personal Care Aides, Nannies, Nonfarm Animal Caretakers and Childcare Workers. This shows an increasing demand in the metro area for these services in the past few months.
According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin MSA reported an unemployment rate of 5.5% or 70,000 unemployed in August 2020, a decrease of 12,800 people unemployed when compared to the previous month of July 2020. When compared to August 2019, there are 35,000 more people unemployed this August. The unemployment rate was at a higher 6.8% or 82,800 unemployed in July 2020.
The top 5 New (first-time) Job Postings in September 2020 were for Software Developers-Applications, Sales Representatives-Wholesale and Manufacturing, Retail Salespersons, Registered Nurses and Managers-All Others.
Employers such as Ascension Health, Hospital Corporation of America, IBM, The University of Texas, Baylor Scott & White Health, Amazon, Anthem Blue Cross, Brookdale Senior Living, HEB and Charles Schwab had the most New (first-time) Job Postings in September 2020.
More jobs ahead. Companies have recently announced new relocation or expansion plans in the Austin MSA, representing a total of about 510 jobs. Shell (The Hague, Netherlands), Saleen Performance Parts (Corona, CA), Lowe's (Mooresville, CA) and Gecko Technology Partners (London, United Kingdom) are the companies that have announced new location plans, creating 265 new jobs in Austin. The expansion list representing 245 new jobs includes PIMCO, Gembah, Double A Labs and Athena Manufacturing.

The data for September 2020 would be the sum of all posted ads from August 14, 2020 to September 13, 2020. This reference period is aligned to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) unemployment job search time period to provide a more accurate comparison of labor supply and labor demand.
