Insights

Due to a comprehensive revision of the HWOL Index and HWOL Data Series, there will be changes in the volume as a result of this revision. The majority of the change in volume was caused by the removal of the bulk of the anonymous ads. Please note that the HWOL Data Series has been revised back to January 2015.

Job Postings measured in this report refers to the employers who are actively advertising online, it is not a representation of Job Openings, which measures all positions that are open (not filled) on the last business day of the month.
There were approximately 67,500 Available Job Postings during the March 2021 monthly reporting period, an increase of 4,100 postings compared to the previous month. There were 24,800 New (first-time) Job Postings, an increase of 1,300 postings compared to February 2021, and a positive sign showing a slightly more confident outlook as companies are placing more first-time ads. New (first-time) Job Postings in March 2021 represented 37 percent of Available Job Postings.
The new table below, Annual Median Wages Comparison, will show the differences in the annual median wages for all the occupational groups in both 2019 and 2020. Several occupational groups saw a larger year-to-year percentage increase such as Legal Occupations, Protective Service Occupations, Building and Grounds Cleaning and Maintenance Occupations, Production Occupations, Transportation and Material Moving Occupations, and Personal Care and Service Occupations.
The Year-to-Year Top 10 Occupational Group Postings chart below shows the changes for each occupational group between March 2020 and March 2021.
13 percent or about 9,100 of the Available Job Postings during the March 2021 reporting period fell under Computer and Mathematical Occupations. The number of Computer and Mathematical Occupation job postings started to see an increase in February 2021, after having a gradual decline since August 2020.
According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin MSA reported an unemployment rate of 5.6% or 70,000 unemployed in February 2021, a increase of 3,000 people unemployed when compared to the previous month of January 2021. The unemployment rate was lower at 5.4% or 67,000 unemployed in February 2021. When compared to February 2020, the number of people unemployed then was at 33,000, with an unemployment rate of 2.6%.
The top 5 New (first-time) Job Postings in March 2021 were for Software Developers-Applications, Sales Representatives-Wholesale and Manufacturing, Managers, Registered Nurses, and Marketing Managers.
More jobs ahead. Companies have recently announced new relocation or expansion plans in the Austin MSA, representing a total of 7,575 jobs. AgencyMVP (Mansfield, TX), Amazon San Marcos Fulfillment Center (Seattle, WA), CrowdStreet (Portland, OR), Guardian Bikes (Irvine, CA), Harmonate (San Jose, CA), MDC Precision (Hayward, CA), NinjaRMM (San Francisco, CA) and Universal Technical Institute (Phoenix, AZ) are the companies that have announced new location plans, creating 2,347 new jobs in Austin. The expansion list representing 5,228 new jobs, includes Athena Manufacturing, Elevate Brands, Jungle Scout, L7 Informatics, Nuclein, Siete Family Foods and Tesla.

This reference period is aligned to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) unemployment job search time period to provide a more accurate comparison of labor supply and labor demand.
