Following the suspension of the partnership between the Austin Police Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Austin Chamber releases the following statement.
"Public safety is a top priority for the Austin business community. We remain committed to working with public sector leaders to ensure that Austin is a safe place to live, work, and do business.
"The Austin Chamber greatly appreciates the service provided by our Austin Police Officers and Texas Department of Safety Troopers to protect and serve our community. Austin has a remarkable track record of public safety, even as one of the largest cities in the country.
"It takes substantial time and resources to hire and train new officers. The current staffing shortage puts a significant strain on our police force. We encourage the Austin Mayor, City Council, and Interim City Manager to continue pursuing innovative solutions as well as funding to achieve appropriate staffing levels for the Austin Police Department. We look forward to the upcoming City of Austin budget that will emphasize the public safety needs of our community."
