Vamonos Vacations - Travel by Train in Europe - Part I
Every time I visit Europe I take a train one way or another. People in Europe are used to take trains in their everyday life business – some even carry their bicycle to go to the office.
Currently, I am planning a vacation for my clients to visit London, Paris, Switzerland, and Milan. It came out that taking trains to go from one city to another is more economical than flying. When purchasing the train tickets several months in advance you can get lower prices, and in some instances can get 1st class seats at lower prices than 2nd class seat regular prices. Also, it might be faster to travel by train than by airplane depending on the travel distance. It takes about 2 hours and a half to go from London to Paris by train.
There are high speed trains that travel at a speed above 200 miles per hour from city to city. Regional trains are slower and take you on scenic routes connecting villages.
Trains within Europe can be faster than taking an airplane because airports require early check-ins, long security checks, luggage drop off, and some might require airport transfers. On the other hand, riding the train you can arrive to the train station closer to the departure time. Also trains depart and arrive to the city center while airports are usually outside the heart of the cities, so taking a train is very time efficient when you are staying at and exploring the city old town.
Another, advantage of taking trains is that their seats are generally larger and more comfortable than economy class on planes, with more legroom and freedom to move around – you can walk to the snack bar or restaurant wagon.
