St. David’s Women’s Center of Texas Among first in Central Texas to earn Level IV Maternal Designation by state

AUSTIN, Texas—St. David’s Women’s Center of Texas, located on the campus of St. David’s North Austin Medical Center, recently became one of the first facilities in Central Texas to earn a Level IV Maternal Designation by the Texas Department of State Health Services. A Level IV designation is awarded to facilities that provide the highest possible comprehensive care and underscores the hospital’s ability to treat the most complex cases that present a high risk of maternal morbidity or mortality.

“Receiving this designation is further affirmation of the comprehensive, interdisciplinary care we provide to mothers across Central Texas,” Kimberly DeStefano, M.D., maternal medical director at St. David’s Women’s Center of Texas, said. “We work closely with our hospital and physician partners to treat the most high-risk patients and could not have grown this program without support from the Austin medical community.”

To be designated as a Level IV Maternal Facility, a hospital must:

  • Provide comprehensive care for women with the most complex medical, surgical and obstetrical conditions, as well as fetuses that present a high risk of maternal morbidity or mortality
  • Have a maternal fetal medicine critical care team with expertise in caring for pregnant or postpartum patients who are in critical condition or have complex medical conditions
  • Have a comprehensive range of medical and surgical critical care specialists and subspecialists, as well as the capability to perform major surgery on women on site
  • Facilitate transports
  • Provide outreach education to lower-level designated facilities

The Maternal Levels of Care Designation, a requirement of House Bill 15, went into effect on March 1, 2018.
