AUSTIN, Texas—In November, St. David’s Medical Center, including Heart Hospital of Austin, was named one of the nation’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals by IBM Watson HealthTM. This is the sixth year the combined hospital campuses have earned this distinction. Prior to being consolidated under St. David’s Medical Center, Heart Hospital of Austin was recognized with this honor six additional times.

St. David’s Medical Center, including Heart Hospital of Austin, is one of five Texas hospitals to earn this designation and the only hospital in Austin to be recognized this year. This designation is especially significant because 30 of this year’s Top 50 Cardiovascular Hospitals were teaching hospitals, and only 20 were non-teaching hospitals, including St. David’s Medical Center.

“Being recognized among the 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals in the nation once again is a testament to the exceptional care provided by our dedicated staff, nurses and physicians every day,” David Huffstutler, chief executive officer of St. David’s HealthCare, said. “This distinction underscores our commitment to providing the highest level of cardiovascular care.”

The IBM Watson Health 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals study is part of the organization’s 100 Top Hospitals® program, and it uses independent and objective research to analyze hospital and health system performance in key clinical and operational areas for selected cardiovascular procedures and medical care. Indicators include risk-adjusted inpatient mortality index; risk-adjusted complications index; mean 30-day risk-adjusted mortality rate; mean 30-day risk-adjusted readmission rate; severity-adjusted length of stay; case mix- and wage-adjusted inpatient cost per case; 30-day episode payment; and adjusted operating profit margin. The study has been conducted annually since 1998.

Based on the results of this year’s study, if all cardiovascular providers in the U.S. performed at the level of this year's winners (based on Medicare patients only), results industry-wide could amount to more than 11,000 additional lives saved, $1.5 billion saved and 2,800 additional cardiac patients without medical complications.
