St. David’s Medical Center earns Level IV Maternal Designation by state

AUSTIN, Texas—St. David’s Medical Center recently earned a Level IV Maternal Designation by the Texas Department of State Health Services. A Level IV designation is awarded to facilities that provide the highest possible comprehensive care and emphasizes the hospital’s ability to treat the most complex cases that present a high risk of maternal morbidity or mortality. Both the Maternal and NICU departments at St. David’s Medical Center have received a Level IV designation.

“This designation demonstrates the commitment of our staff to provide high-quality patient care for mothers and babies with the most medically complex conditions,” Todd Steward, chief executive officer of St. David’s Medical Center, said. “As a result of our team’s dedication, St. David’s Medical Center is the only facility in Austin to earn both a Level IV Maternal and Level IV NICU designation by the state.”

To be designated as a Level IV Maternal facility, a hospital must:

  • Provide comprehensive care for women with the most complex medical, surgical and obstetrical conditions, as well as fetuses that present a high risk of maternal morbidity or mortality
  • Have a maternal fetal medicine critical care team with expertise in caring for pregnant or postpartum patients who are in critical condition or have complex medical conditions
  • Have a comprehensive range of medical and surgical critical care specialists and subspecialists, as well as the capability to perform major surgery on women on site
  • Facilitate transports
  • Provide outreach education to lower-level designated facilities

The Maternal Levels of Care Designation, a requirement of House Bill 15 that went into effect on March 1, 2018, is valid for three years.
