Imagine yourself enjoying live music in an open-air concert with mountains and Lake Geneva backgrounds. Each year the Montreux town in Switzerland is home of a music festival where jazz, soul and blues among other music genres are played. This is the 60th year this festival is held, and it lasts about 2 weeks (July 3-18). Music is played at different stages along Lake Geneva shore in Montreux. More than 200 concerts are free.
Montreux has been called the capital of the Swiss Riviera due to its mild climate which allows palm trees to grow – a microclimate in Switzerland’s cool climate. You can enjoy amazing walks along the lakeside. The average high temperature in Montreux is approximately 77°F in July (average low is 64°F).
Do you like to visit castles and palaces? If so, you cannot miss visiting the Château de Chillon castle which has been very well preserved over the centuries. This romantic castle by the lake has been the inspiration for writers such as Lord Byron, Victor Hugo, Goethe, Charles Dickens, and others.
Among Montreux’s splendid buildings you will notice the historical Fairmont Le Montreux Palace a luxury hotel built in 1906.
How about food? You should try Raclette, a Swiss specialty that includes melted Raclette cheese over boiled potatoes, onions, and other ingredients. This specialty could be accompanied by a local wine from the nearby Lavaux vineyards.
If you are attending the concert you might want to visit other areas in Switzerland, the Playground of Europe. The train system is very well developed and the best mode of transportation to explore the country.
