Austin is a leader in semiconductor and electronics R&D and manufacturing

Fueled by Austin’s young, highly trained workforce and partnerships between the region’s higher education institutions and the private sector, Austin is a leader in semiconductor and electronics R&D and manufacturing.

Many of the top computer and microchip firms have established major design and production centers in Austin. Austin is home to Samsung’s largest semiconductor production center outside of Korea.

Samsung capped its large long-term investment in Austin in 2022 by beginning construction of a second manufacturing campus in Taylor. The $17 billion project will bring an additional 2,000 people to facilities totaling 6 million square feet on 1,200 acres in Williamson County.

Other fabs in the Austin area include NXP Semiconductors and Infineon. Applied Materials has a major facility making semiconductor production equipment. Advanced Micro Devices presence is among the largest nonmanufacturing employers in the industry, but chip design centers abound including ARM, Cirrus Logic, Ericsson, IBM, Intel, Microchip, NVIDIA, Qualcomm, Silicon Laboratories, and Skyworks Solutions.

In total, semiconductor and related companies in Austin number about 150 and employ over 60,000. As one of Austin’s most large and long-established industries, relevant strategic research partnership opportunities and talent development programs are well established.

Texas’s economic development community is working to elevate Texas as a hub of semiconductor manufacturing activity to rival chip production in other countries. The National Semiconductor Centers Texas Task Force has brought industry stakeholders together with the intention of making Texas the future destination of the National Semiconductor Technology Center and the National Advanced Packaging Manufacturing Program.
