Austin Steam Train Association

The Austin Steam Train Association (ASTA) brings the past to life with one-of-a-kind vintage train rides through the Texas Hill Country and an on-site museum. Founded in 1989, ASTA is a volunteer-led nonprofit — Central Texas’s only excursion railroad, the only nonprofit train in Texas, and the only museum in Cedar Park. Each year, we serve more than 30,000 riders while preserving the legacy of historic railroading and making it accessible to folks today.

At the heart of our experience is our train: a collection of fully restored 1930s–1950s-era passenger cars pulled by a historic diesel locomotive. Every ride is more than a journey — it’s a chance to step into the stories, sounds, and spirit of railroading’s golden age. From family-friendly rides like the Hill Country Flyer or North Pole Flyer, to adult-only experiences like the Wine Flyer or Trivia Train, each train ride offers a different experience of nostalgia, learning, and fun.

ASTA is also a truly unique venue. You can charter a single railcar or the entire train for a private excursion, or host a stationary event aboard the train or at our historic Cedar Park Depot. From corporate gatherings and fundraisers to weddings and celebrations, our setting offers a backdrop unlike anywhere else in the region.

As a moving museum, we aim to spark curiosity and connection by preserving vintage rail equipment, sharing its history, and offering hands-on experiences that build lasting memories. Whether you're six or sixty, riding with ASTA is a chance to connect with history — and with each other.

ASTA is powered by dedicated volunteers and a supportive community. To discuss how you can be a part of this, please email info@austinsteamtrain.org.
