Austin’s Emerging Deep Tech Ecosystem: From Innovation Hub to Global Technology Leader

Austin’s technology story is evolving.
For decades, Austin has been known for its software, semiconductor and startup ecosystem. Today, the region is building a new reputation as a hub for deep technology — where advances in aerospace, quantum computing, robotics, biotechnology, defense and advanced manufacturing are converging to create new opportunities for economic growth.
That evolution was at the center of our second annual State of Tech event, a partnership with the Austin Technology Council that brought together technology leaders to explore Austin’s growing tech ecosystem and what it will take to remain competitive in the years ahead.
Austin’s Technology Advantage
Keynote presenter Heather Brunner highlighted the breadth of Austin’s emerging technology sectors, pointing to growth in space technology, quantum computing, defense and robotics.
Austin’s space industry continues to expand, with companies such as Firefly Aerospace and CesiumAstro contributing to the region’s growing aerospace capabilities. Brunner also highlighted the role of The University of Texas at Austin, including its aerospace programs and research capabilities, in developing the talent and innovation needed to support the industry.
Brunner discussed Austin positioning itself as an emerging quantum computing hub, building on Austin’s long-standing semiconductor expertise and growing network of technology companies. At the same time, our defense technology sector is expanding through work in autonomy, cybersecurity and other advanced technologies.
Robotics represents another significant opportunity. Companies developing autonomous and humanoid robotics are bringing advanced technologies into manufacturing and industrial environments, further strengthening the connection between Austin’s technology and manufacturing sectors.
Brunner emphasized that these industries should not be viewed independently. Austin’s advantage comes from the convergence of multiple technology sectors, creating opportunities for innovations developed in one industry to accelerate progress in another.
From Software to Deep Tech
The panel discussion, moderated following Brunner’s presentation, explored how Austin’s technology ecosystem has evolved over the past three decades.
Moderated by Samer Zabaneh of Lathem & Watkins, panelists James Carwell, Vice President of Technology at CesiumAstro; Amir Husain, Chairman of WorldQuant Foundry; and whurley, Founder and CEO of Strangeworks, shared perspectives on Austin’s transformation from a university-centered community into a major technology and innovation hub.
Austin’s first major technology wave was driven largely by software and SaaS. Today, the region is building on that foundation to tackle more complex challenges that require significant research, capital, infrastructure and specialized talent.
Panelists pointed to broader global trends — including changing energy demands, technological advancements and evolving consumer needs — as forces shaping the next generation of companies.
The opportunity for Austin is to remain ahead of those trends while continuing to create an environment where ambitious companies can launch, scale and innovate.
Investing in Austin’s Future
The message throughout 'was clear: Austin has an opportunity to become a global leader in deep technology, but that future will not happen automatically.
Supporting the next generation of technology companies will require coordinated investment across the public and private sectors, stronger workforce pipelines and deeper collaboration between businesses, universities and research institutions.
As Austin’s technology ecosystem continues to evolve, the region’s greatest advantage may be its ability to bring different industries, ideas and people together.
From space and quantum computing to robotics, biotech and defense, Austin is building an ecosystem where technologies can intersect — and where those intersections can create entirely new opportunities.
The next chapter of Austin’s technology story is already underway. The opportunity now is to make sure the region has the talent, investment and infrastructure to scale it.
