How companies “UpSkill” their workforce and you can too

Posted on 06/29/2017 by Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce

It’s a situation that many companies are familiar with: When employees lack the essential skills needed for a job there is a higher risk of organizational dysfunction through squandered resources, loss of quality, and scarcity of time.

According to the Deloitte and the Aspen Institute, 24 million frontline workers face little to no upward career growth. Yet, employers who retain their front line workers and build within their company have a clear advantage over their competition. Training and developing existing employees is one of the most effective ways companies can address their workforce skills dilemma and develop a sustainable talent strategy. The solution isn’t to hire external talent as a quick fix; it is to “upskill” your existing workforce first.

Join the Austin Chamber on August 17 for the annual State of Talent and explore how to attract, retain and upskill your workforce to remain competitive.

The half-day conference at the Sheraton will showcase panel discussions on high-skilled immigration, and technology. Panelists include Robert Loughran of Foster LLP; Bruce Porter of UT Computer Science; Bill Blackstone of GM and Galvanize Inc.; Annette Alexander of WP Engine; and JR Ruiz of Deloitte. Hill and Knowlton will moderate a panel on ways businesses can engage millennials in their company culture.
