Austin Chamber staff helps those in need through IACT’s Hands on Housing Program

The holidays are all about giving thanks for what we have and helping others. That’s why the Greater Austin Chamber partnered with Interfaith Action of Central Texas to participate in their Hands on Housing Program.

Since 1987, Interfaith Action of Central Texas (IACT) has provided low-income homeowners with hope through their Hands on Housing Program. The program utilizes volunteers and skilled professionals who repair the homes of seniors and disabled individuals who are living in poverty. The goal of the program is to keep homeowners safe and help them remain in the homes and neighborhoods they love.

Since October 28, our staff and members of the Unity Church of Hills have been working hard to paint the home and newly installed deck of senior couple Gregorio and Maria. For 31 years, the couple has lived in their home. They love to garden and are avid football fans. To show their pride, they wanted their home to be painted the colors of their beloved team, the Texas Longhorns. The home was completed Saturday, November 18 in time for the holidays.

This fall, more than 24 organizations and 250 volunteers participated in IACT’s Hands on Housing Program. Eight homes were painted and repaired in the Central Texas region. The Hands on Housing Program, held twice a year, will commence April 2018.

For more information on the Chamber’s local volunteer opportunities, contact Tina Grider-Cannon, Senior Director of Local Government Relations at 512-478-9383.
