Austin’s music scene isn’t just culture—it’s serious economic power.
That reality was front and center at yesterday’s “Music as an Economic Force” conversation at the Moody Center, where leaders unpacked just how much the industry fuels Austin’s growth.
Live music drives real dollars. Davon Barbour from the Downtown Austin Alliance provided stats that music events alone increase downtown foot traffic by 20–25%.
Austin City Limits Music Festival generates over $500M annually in economic impact—more than $5B since its launch. It’s also a massive job creator, from 1,000+ bartenders onsite to tens of thousands of roles across hospitality, transportation, and beyond noted panelist Emmett Beliveau from C3 Presents.
The impact goes deeper than numbers.
Music is core to Austin’s identity. As the city grows into a global destination, there’s a real tension: how do we scale without losing the DNA that made Austin special in the first place?
A few ideas that stuck out:
If we lose live music, we risk losing the “soul” of the city—and a major draw for visitors and businesses alike
Companies don’t just relocate for tax incentives—they come for the experience, and Austin’s music scene helps close deals
There’s a growing need to invest in “music infrastructure,” from venues to workforce pipelines
Not all music jobs look like music jobs—this ecosystem supports hundreds of thousands of roles across industries

There was also a clear call to action:
Supporting independent venues, keeping Austin affordable for artists, and investing in the next generation of songwriters—not just performers—will define whether we sustain this momentum.
As special guest panelist, Matthew McConaughey put it: Austin works because of its authenticity. You don’t have to compete to belong here—you can just follow your ears.
