INSIGHTS

  • There were approximately 40,100 Available Job Postings during the October 2018 monthly reporting period, 2,000 less postings when compared to October 2017.
  • 8,400 or 21 percent of the Available Job Postings during the October reporting period fell under Computer and Mathematical Occupations.
  • Approximately 43 percent or about 17,100 of Available Job Postings are New Job Postings with Computer and Mathematical Occupations, Office and Administrative Support Occupations, Sales and Related Occupations and Management Occupations leading in this category.
  • 14,500 or 36% of all Available Job Postings pay an annual median wage of between $30,000 to $65,000 in the Austin MSA for October 2018. Of these 14,500 posted jobs in this category, 3,600 or 25 percent would require more than a high school diploma but less than a bachelor's degree while 8,617 or 59 percent would require a high school diploma or less. The top 10 posted occupations or approximately 5,500 postings, in this annual median wage range of $30,000 to $65,000 category, all require an entry level education of less than an associate's degree. These are the top 10 posted occupations: First-Line Supervisors of Retail Sales Workers, Customer Service Representatives, Computer User Support Specialists, First-Line Supervisors of Office and Administrative Support Workers, Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers, Maintenance and Repair Workers-General, Sales Representatives-Services-All Other, First-Line Supervisors of Food Preparation and Serving Workers, Executive Secretaries and Executive Administrative Assistants and Light Truck or Delivery Services Drivers.
  • The region's Master Community Workforce Plan's top-line target is to ensure that in the five years between 2017-2021, an additional 1,800-plus Austin residents currently in poverty receive training, credentialing, and are placed in jobs paying at least $40,000 in technology, healthcare and skilled trades.
  • Austin added 40,000 net new jobs in the 12 months ending in September, making Austin the 7th fastest growing major metro.
  • 60 percent of the approximate 17,200 unemployment insurance (UI) claimants in FY 2018 that are actively seeking a job in Travis County have less than an associate's degree, according to Workforce Solutions Capital Area.
  • According to the Travis County Poverty Brief, the American Community Survey 2012-2016 data shows that 32 percent or 355,874 of Travis County residents have an income under 200% of the poverty threshold.
  • More jobs ahead. Companies have recently announced new location or expansion plans in the Austin MSA, representing almost 2,100 jobs. The expansion list includes William Murray Golf, WeWork, Texas Mutual, TaskRabbit, Rollick, Roku, Gensler, ESO Solutions, ClearBlade and Amazon. Employers such as Resideo (Golden Valley, MN), Honor (San Francisco, CA), ePac (Middleton, WI), Displate (Warsaw, Poland) and Babylon (London, United Kingdom) are the companies that have announced new location plans in Austin.

There were approximately 40,100 Available Job Postings during the October 2018 monthly reporting period, 2,000 less postings when compared to September 2017. 8,400 or 21 percent of the Available Job Postings during the October reporting period fell under Computer and Mathematical Occupations which also had the largest year-to-year increases in postings. The Business and Financial Operations Occupations also had significant increases in year-to-year postings.

The Major Occupational Groups that saw 400 year-to-year increases in Available Job Postings, when compared to October 2017 are Computer and Mathematical Occupations and Business and Financial Occupations.

Approximately 44 percent or about 18,200 of job postings are New Job Postings with Computer and Mathematical Occupations, Management Occupations, Healthcare Practitioners and Technical Occupations and Business and Financial Operations Occupations leading in this category.

According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin MSA reported an unemployment rate of 2.7% or 32,400 unemployed in October 2018, with 2,200 less people unemployed when compared to the previous month. The unemployment rate was 2.7% or 31,600 unemployed in October 2017. The current labor force for the Austin MSA is 1,165,900, an increase of 43,100 into our regions' labor force, when compared to the same time last year.

The Austin MSA had approximately 7,100 more Available Job Postings than the number of unemployed for September 2018. There has been more Available Job Postings than the unemployed in the Austin MSA each month since May 2017.

Computer and Mathematical Occupations saw about 900 year-to-year increase in Available Job Postings. Software Developers, Applications saw the greatest share of the year-to-year increase in Available Job Postings.

Occupations that had a 80 or more increase in year-to-year postings were Software Developers-Applications, Computer Systems Engineers/Architects, Software Developers-Systems Software and Web Developers. Companies that have posted 30 or more jobs under this occupational category in our region are DELL, IBM, Visa, Army, Apple, Inc., Fiserv, Internal Revenue Service and Home Depot.
