INSIGHTS

  • 40,400 Available Job Openings, but fewer than a year ago. 40,400 Available Job Postings during October 2017, or 2,200 less compared to October 2016. Healthcare Practitioners and Technical OccupationsComputer and Mathematical Occupations and Sales and Related Occupations saw the largest decline in year-to-year Available Job Postings.

  • The Education, Training and Library Occupations, Architecture, Training and Library Occupations and Community and Social Services Occupations have the largest year-to-year Available Job Posting increases.

  • Available Job Postings in October 2017 is lower than October of 2015 and 2016. 

  • Demand for Tech talent remains high. Eight of the Top 20 occupations are tech-related. Registered Nurses is the top posted occupation currently for October 2017 and Teacher Assistants saw the largest year-to-year increase in postings for all occupations posted and is not a too difficult-to-hire occupation in our region.

  • When compared nationally, harder-to-fill occupations in the Top 20 Available Job Postings mostly require a high school diploma or less. Most of the more difficult-to-hire occupations in the Top 20 posted jobs, when compared nationwide, require a high school diploma or less. Maids and Housekeeping CleanersMaintenance and Repair Workers, General, First-Line Supervisors of Food Preparation and Serving Workers, First-Line Supervisors of Office and Administrative Support and First-Line Supervisors of Retail Sales Workers are the job postings that more difficult to fill in our region. 

  • Unemployment rate is 2.9%. According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin MSA reported an unemployment rate of 2.9% or 33,300 unemployed in September 2017. 

  • More jobs ahead. Companies recently announced new location or expansion plans in the Austin MSA, representing about 2,685 plus jobs. The list includes Alert Media, American Advisors Group, Arsenal Products, Association of British Healthcare Industries, Asure Software, Baxter Planning Systems, CSDC, eBay, Ericsson, ESO Solutions, Innovative Funding Services, Living Spaces, Mitratech, National Real Estate Solutions, Software International House, Sonic Healthcare USA, Tethr, vXchnge, WeWork, Deloitte, Facebook, Jask, LVL Technologies, Main Street Hub, Nolan Ryan Beef, OriGen Biomedical, Siemens Building Technologies and TrustRadius.

There were approximately 40,400 Available Job Postings during the October 2017 monthly reporting period, a decrease of about 2,200 Available Job Postings compared to October 2016. About 7,000 or 17 percent of the Available Job Postings during the October reporting period fell under Computer and Mathematical Occupations. 47 percent or 18,800 are New Job Postings.

The Major Occupational Groups that saw the largest increases in the volume of Available Job Postings compared to October 2016 are Education, Training and Library Occupations, Architecture and Engineering Occupations, Community and Social Services Occupations, Life, Physical and Social Science Occupations and Business and Financial Operations Occupations. Healthcare Practitioners and Technical OccupationsComputer and Mathematical Occupations and Sales and Related Occupations saw the largest decline in year-to-year Available Job Postings.

According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin MSA reported an unemployment rate of 2.9% or 33,300 unemployed in September 2017. This represents an decrease of 4,500 unemployed compared to August 2017 which had a 3.3% unemployment rate or 37,800 unemployed. Approximately 63% of unemployment insurance (UI) claimants that are actively seeking a job in Travis County have less than an associate's degree, according to Workforce Solutions Capital Area.

Teacher Assistants, Social and Human Service Assistants, Information Technology Project Managers, Public Relations and Fundraising Managers and Security Guards all saw a 70 or more increase in year-to-year postings. Web Developers, Network and Computer Systems AdministratorsCustomer Service RepresentativesRegistered Nurses, Nursing Assistants, Surgical TechnologistsDemonstrators and Product Promoters and Computer Systems Analysts had a 120 or more decrease in year-to-year postings.

When compared nationwide, Executive Secretaries and Executive Administrative Assistants, Computer Systems Analysts, Customer Service RepresentativesHeavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers and Computer User Support Specialists are the easier-to-hire occupations in the Austin MSA. Maids and Housekeeping Cleaners, Registered Nurses, Maintenance and Repair Workers, General, Management Analysts, First-Line Supervisors of Food Preparation and Serving Workers, First-Line Supervisors of Office and Administrative Support and First-Line Supervisors of Retail Sales Workers are the job postings that more difficult to fill in our region, when compared nationwide. Approximately 46 percent of all Available Job Postings require a Bachelor's degree or more as the entry level of educational qualification needed for the posted occupation.

The chart below lists the top 20 unique available job postings under Computer and Mathematical Occupations in the Austin – Round Rock – San Marcos MSA from September 14, 2017 to October 13, 2017.

Information Technology Project Managers saw the largest year-to-year increase in Available Jobs Postings, followed by Software Quality Assurance Engineers and Testers and Computer and Information Research Scientists. Network and Computer Systems Administrators, Computer Systems Analysts and Computer User Support Specialistssaw the largest decline in Available Job Postings. In terms of New Job Postings, Web Developers, Network and Computer Systems Administrators and Computer Systems Analysts saw the largest year-to-year decreases in October 2017.

The Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell MSA, Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington MSA, Boston-Cambridge-Newton MSA and the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood MSA have a higher hiring difficulty in this occupational category when compared to the Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos MSA

All the Top 20 occupations in this category pay an annual median wage of more than $30,000 in the Austin MSA

Seton Family of Hospitals, TXHCA-The Healthcare Company and South Austin Medical Clinic PA had an increase of 40 or more year-to-year Available Job Postings.

Healthcare Practitioners and Technical Occupations saw approximately 800 less Available Job Postings compared to the same period last year.
