There were approximately 40,750 Available Job Postings during the October 2016 monthly reporting period, a decrease of about 3,350 Available Job Postings compared to October 2015. About 7,500 or 18 percent of the available postings during the October reporting period fell under Computer and Mathematical Occupations.

Other occupational groups not reflected in this report that accounts for another 5,000 Available Job Openings are Building and Grounds Cleaning and Maintenance Occupations (3%), Architecture and Engineering Occupations (3%), Healthcare Support Occupations (2%), Education, Training, and Library Occupations (2%) and Arts, Design, Entertainment, Sports, and Media Occupations (2%). Building and Grounds Cleaning and Maintenance Occupations and Healthcare Support Occupations were the two occupational groups that saw a very slight increase in postings compared to the same time last year.

USA Today ranked Austin 9th on the "American Cities Adding The Most Jobs". The Kauffman Foundation named Austin 1st in the "Top 25 Cities For Startup Activity, 2016". According to CBRE, Austin is ranked 5th in the "Scoring Tech Talent" list for 2016.

According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin MSA reported an unemployment rate of 3.5% or 39,100 unemployed in September 2016. The Austin MSA reported an annual job growth rate of 3.0% or 28,900 net new jobs in September 2016, making Austin the ninth best performing among the 50 largest metro areas. Professional and Business Services added the most jobs (6,000 or 3.7%) in the past year. The fastest growing industries are Wholesale Trade (8.8%) and Construction and Natural Resources (8.6%).

Approximately 65% of unemployment insurance (UI) claimants that are actively seeking a job in Travis County have less than an associate's degree, according to Workforce Solutions Capital Area.

Note: The data for October 2016 would be the sum of all posted ads from September 14, 2016 to October 13, 2016. This reference period is aligned to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) unemployment job search time period to provide a more accurate comparison of labor supply and labor demand.

The total number of Available Job Postings was roughly 31,600 in October 2012 and have risen to 40,750 in October 2016. Of the 40,750 job postings, about half are New Job Postings. About 81% are for full-time positions, 12% are part-time positions, 6% are contract positions and about 1% are for internships.

Maids and Housekeeping Cleaners, Management Analysts, Sales Managers, Network and Computer Systems Administrators, Medical and Health Services Managers and Maintenance and Repair Workers, General were the few occupations that saw a very slight year-to-year increase in postings.

About 1% or 480 of the available job postings, not reflected in this report, are for internship positions. The top internship postings are for Registered Nurses, Electricians, Market Research Analysts and Marketing Specialists, Civil Engineers and Public Relations Specialists. Both the Healthcare Practitioners and Technical Occupations and Architecture and Engineering Occupations saw a slight increase in internship postings while the Computer and Mathematical Occupations and Arts, Design, Entertainment, Sports and Media Occupations saw a decline.

Half of the Top 20 occupations in our region require a Bachelor's degree while almost all the rest require an educational qualification of less than an Associate's degree.

Registered Nurses remain the top occupation and a significant increase in postings are from Psychiatric and Substance Abuse Hospitals. Software Developers, Applications saw an increase in postings from All Other Miscellaneous Store Retailers (except Tobacco Stores).

The Computer and Mathematical Occupations saw almost 750 less Available Job Postings compared to the same period last year. Software Developers, Applications, Computer User Support Specialists, Web Developers, Computer Systems Analysts, Computer Programmers and Computer Systems Engineers/Architects saw its postings decrease by 80 or more.

The Denver-Aurora-Broomfield MSA, Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington MSA and San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont MSA has a slightly higher hiring difficulty in this occupational category compared to the Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos MSA while the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue MSA has a lower hiring difficulty.

The Healthcare Practitioners and Technical Occupations saw a 380 decrease in postings compared to the same time last year. Surgical Technologists continues to see the largest year-to-year increase in postings, followed by Radiologic Technologists, Respiratory Therapists and Pharmacy Technicians.
