  • Approximately 40,550 Available Job Postings during the monthly reporting period, a decrease of 4,000 postings compared to the same period last year.
  • Largest year-to-year decreases in the Computer and Mathematical Occupations, followed by Office and Administrative Support Occupations and Sales and Related Occupations.

There were approximately 40,550 Available Job Postings during the November 2016 monthly reporting period, a decrease of about 4,000 Available Job Postings compared to November 2015. About 7,100 or 17 percent of the Available Job Postings during the November reporting period fell under Computer and Mathematical Occupations.

Other occupational groups not reflected in this report that account for another 5,600 Available Job Openings are Building and Grounds Cleaning and Maintenance Occupations (3%), Healthcare Support Occupations (3%), Architecture and Engineering Occupations (2%), Education, Training, and Library Occupations (2%), Arts, Design, Entertainment, Sports, and Media Occupations (2%) and Personal Care and Service Occupations (2%).

Building and Grounds Cleaning and Maintenance Occupations (3%), Transportation and Material Moving Occupations (5%) and Food Preparation and Serving Related Occupations (6%) were the three occupational groups that saw an increase of 100 or more postings compared to the same time last year.

According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin MSA reported an unemployment rate of 3.2% or 35,300 unemployed in October 2016. The Austin MSA reported an annual job growth rate of 2.2% or 21,200 net new jobs in October 2016, down from 3.0% or 28,900 net new jobs in September 2016, making Austin the 20th fastest growing major metro. Education and Health Services added the most jobs (3.4% or 3,800) in the past year. The fastest growing industries are Financial Activities (5.7% or 3,100) and Wholesale Trade (5.6% or 2,800). Manufacturing lost 7.5% or 4,300 jobs.

Austin's total personal income grew by 7.2% in 2015 and has the 4th fastest growth rate among major metros, after San Jose, Denver and San Francisco. Austin has seen strong gains in average earnings per job at $60,805 in 2015, which is up 4.4% over 2014.

Approximately 65% of unemployment insurance (UI) claimants that are actively seeking a job in Travis County have less than an associate's degree, according to Workforce Solutions Capital Area.

Note: The data for November 2016 would be the sum of all posted ads from October 14, 2016 to November 13, 2016. This reference period is aligned to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) unemployment job search time period to provide a more accurate comparison of labor supply and labor demand.

The total number of Available Job Postings was roughly 31,900 in November 2012 and have risen to 40,550 in November 2016. Of the 40,550 job postings, about half are New Job Postings. Of the Available Job Postings, about 80% are for full-time positions, 12.5% are part-time positions, 7% are contract positions and less than 1% are for internships.

Maids and Housekeeping Cleaners is the only occupation on this list that saw 100 or more increase in year-to-year in postings. Nursing Assistants, Laborers and Freight, Stock, and Material Movers, Hand and Surgical Technologists are the other three occupations that saw similar year-to-year increases. All these occupations require either a postsecondary nondegree award or no formal educational credentials as the typical education needed for entry. Registered Nurses, Retail Salespersons, Software Developers, Applications and Computer Systems Analysts all saw a 200 or more year-to-year decrease in postings.

Less than 1% or 460 of the Available Job Postings, not reflected in this report, are for internship positions. This is an approximate 25 percent year-to-year decrease. The top internship postings are for Registered Nurses, Electricians, Market Research Analysts and Marketing Specialists, Computer Programmers, Civil Engineers and Plumbers. Healthcare Practitioners and Technical Occupations saw a slight increase in internship postings while the Computer and Mathematical Occupations, Arts, Design, Entertainment, Sports and Media Occupations and Business and Financial Operations Occupations saw a decline.

The Denver-Aurora-Broomfield MSA, Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington MSA and San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont MSA has a slightly higher hiring difficulty in this occupational category compared to the Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos MSA while the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue MSA has a lower hiring difficulty.

The Healthcare Practitioners and Technical Occupations saw a 380 decrease in postings compared to the same time last year. Surgical Technologists continues to see the largest year-to-year increase in postings, followed by Radiologic Technologists, Respiratory Therapists and Pharmacy Technicians.
