INSIGHTS

  • 8,500 or 20 percent of the Available Job Postings during the May reporting period fell under Computer and Mathematical Occupations and had the largest year-to-year increases in postings. The Management Occupations and Business and Financial Operations Occupations had significant increases in year-to-year postings. The increase in Management Occupations also highlights the increased need for experienced talent in our region.

  • Approximately 44 percent or about 18,500 of job postings are New Job Postings with Computer and Mathematical Occupations, Management Occupations, Business and Financial Operations Occupations leading in this category.

  • Five of the Top 20 posted occupations in the Computer and Mathematical Occupational group now pay an annual median wage of over $100,000: Software Developers, Applications, Information Security Analysts, Software Developers, Systems Software, Computer and Information Research Scientists and Computer Network Architects.

  • According to the Travis County Poverty Brief, the American Community Survey 2012-2016 data shows that 32 percent or 355,874 of Travis County residents have an income under 200% of the poverty threshold. The Master Community Workforce Plan's top-line target is to ensure an additional 1,800-plus Austin residents currently in poverty receive training, credentialing, and are placed in jobs paying at least $40,000 in technology, healthcare and skilled trades between 2017-2021.

  • More jobs ahead. Companies recently announced new location or expansion plans in the Austin MSA, representing about 3,300 plus jobs. The expansion list includes Vytalyx, Velocity Credit Union, Texas Concrete (Old Castle Materials), Ojo Labs, Intiva Health, Indeed, HanAra Software, EBQuickstart, Benchmark International and Ascension Seton. Employers such as Velocity Growth (Del Mar, CA), Infocyte (San Antonio, TX) and Charles Schwab (San Francisco,CA) are the companies that have announced new location plans in Austin.

There were approximately 42,200 Available Job Postings during the May 2018 monthly reporting period, about 200 less postings when compared to May 2017.

8,500 or 20 percent of the Available Job Postings during the May reporting period fell under Computer and Mathematical Occupations and had the largest year-to-year increases in postings. The Management Occupations and Business and Financial Operations Occupations had significant increases in year-to-year postings. The increase in Management Occupations also highlights the increased need for experienced talent in our region.

The Major Occupational Groups that saw more than 200 year-to-year increases in Available Job Postings, when compared to May 2017, are Computer and Mathematical Occupations, Management Occupations, Business and Financial Operations Occupations and Architecture and Engineering Occupations. Approximately 44 percent or about 18,500 of job postings are New Job Postings with Computer and Mathematical Occupations, Management Occupations, Business and Financial Operations Occupations leading in this category.

Approximately 63% of unemployment insurance (UI) claimants that are actively seeking a job in Travis County have less than an associate's degree, according to Workforce Solutions Capital Area. According to the Travis County Poverty Brief, the American Community Survey 2012-2016 data shows that 32 percent or 355,874 of Travis County residents have an income under 200% of the poverty threshold. The Master Community Workforce Plan's top-line target is to ensure an additional 1,800 Austin residents currently in poverty receive training, credentialing, and are placed in jobs paying at least $40,000 in technology, healthcare and skilled trades between 2017-2021.

According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin MSA reported an unemployment rate of 2.8% or 32,900 unemployed in May 2018, no change from the previous month. The unemployment rate was 3.0% or 34,400 back in May 2017. The current labor force for the Austin MSA is 1,188,900, an increase of 39,500 when compared to the same time last year.

Software Developers, Applications, Marketing Managers, Managers, All Other, Market Research Analysts and Marketing Specialists, Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers, Lawyers, Software Developers, Systems Software, Combined Food Preparation and Serving Workers, Including Fast Food, Computer Programmers and Industrial Engineers saw a 80 or more increase in year-to-year postings.

Computer and Mathematical Occupations saw about 700 year-to-year increase in Available Job Postings. Software Developers, Applications saw the greatest share of the year-to-year increase in Available Job Postings, followed by Software Developers, Systems Software, Computer Programmers, Information Security Analysts and Computer Systems Enginners/Architects.

Companies that have posted 40 or more jobs under this occupational category are Visa, General Electric, Home Depot, Conduent and Perficient, Inc.
