INSIGHTS

  • Lots of hiring. 5,400 more people employed between March 2017 and April 2017.

  • Many job openings, but fewer than a year ago. 41,100 Available Job Postings during May 2017, or 2,100 less compared to May 2016.

  • Job postings in May 2017 is lower than May of past three years. The Austin MSA saw more than 42,000 Available Job Postings in 2014, 2015 and 2016 but is below 42,000 in May 2017.

  • Demand for Tech talent remains high. Software Developers-Applications replaced Registered Nurses as the top posted occupation since March 2017. The annual median wage for Software Developers-Applications in the Austin MSA increased from $99,420 to $105,150, according to the data by the BLS.

  • Plenty of middle wage jobs available. Ten of the Top 20 occupations posted require less than an associate's degree as the typical education needed for entry, representing about 6,400 postings. All but two, Retail Salesperson and Maids and Housekeeping Cleaners, posted an annual median wage of $30,000 or more in the Austin MSA.

  • Unemployment tops 36,100. According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin MSA reported an unemployment rate of 3.2% or 36,100 unemployed in April 2017. This represents an decrease of 5,200 unemployed compared to March 2017 which had a 3.6% unemployment rate or 41,300 unemployed. In April 2017, the number of unemployed (41,300) was slightly greater than the number of Available Job Postings (39,600).

  • More jobs ahead. Several companies recently announced new location or expansion plans in the Austin MSA including about 580 jobs. The list includes Zenoss, Visual Lighting Technologies, Urban Mining, Republic National Distributing, Novarti Technologies, Northwestern Mutual, LeanDNA and Fathom Water Management.

  • Austin net job growth ranks 10th. The Austin MSA reported an annual job growth rate of 2.9% or 28,900 net new jobs in the 12 months ending in April making Austin the 10th fastest growing major metro.

There were approximately 41,100 Available Job Postings during the May 2017 monthly reporting period, a decrease of about 2,100 Available Job Postings compared to May 2016. About 7,700 or 19 percent of the Available Job Postings during the May reporting period fell under Computer and Mathematical Occupations. Almost half of the Available Job Postings are New Job Postings for May 2017.

The Major Occupational Groups that saw the largest decline in the volume of Available Job Postings compared to May 2016 are Office and Administrative Support Occupations, Food Preparation and Serving Related Occupations, Sales and Related Occupations and Transportation & Material Moving Occupations. Computer and Mathematical Occupations had the largest volume of New Job Postings for May 2017.

According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin MSA reported an unemployment rate of 3.2% or 36,100 unemployed in April 2017. This represents an decrease of 5,200 unemployed compared to March 2017 which had a 3.6% unemployment rate or 41,300 unemployed. In April 2017, the number of unemployed (41,300) was slightly greater than the number of Available Job Postings (39,600). Approximately 65% of unemployment insurance (UI) claimants that are actively seeking a job in Travis County have less than an associate's degree, according to Workforce Solutions Capital Area.

The Austin MSA reported an annual job growth rate of 2.9% or 28,900 net new jobs in the 12 months ending in April making Austin the 10th fastest growing major metro. Education and Healthcare added the most jobs (6.0% or 6,900) in the last 12 months - while the fastest growing industry was Transportation, Warehousing and Utilities (7.6% or 1,300 jobs).

The U.S. News & World Report named Austin as the "Best Place to Live in the U.S." in 2017. Savills calls Austin "one of the 22 Cities at the Forefront of Global Tech" while SmartAsset named Austin as one of the "10 Best Cities to Raise a Family". Austin also comes in 3rd on Gallups' "Good Jobs Rate" ranking based on the percentage of adults who work for an employer full-time. Indeed ranked Austin No. 4 on its "25 Best Cities for Job Seekers" list.

Software Developers-Applications is again, the top occupation posted in the Austin MSA and its annual median wage increased from $99,420 to $105,150 according to the latest data released by the BLS.

Software Developers-Applications, Management Analysts, Marketing Managers, Computer Systems Engineers/Architects and Sales Representatives-Wholesale and Manufacturing-Technical and Scientific Products, Information Technology Project Managers, Market Research Analysts and Marketing Specialists and Elementary School Teachers-Except Special Education all saw a 70 or more increase in year-to-year postings. First-Line Supervisors of Food Preparation and Serving Workers, Tellers and Web Developers saw a 140 or more decrease in year-to-year postings.

Ten of the Top 20 occupations posted require less than an associate's degree as the typical education needed for entry. All but two, Retail Salesperson and Maids and Housekeeping Cleaners, posted an annual median wage of $30,000 or more in the Austin MSA.

The Austin MSA has a higher hiring difficulty for Maids and Housekeeping Cleaners, Management Analysts, Maintenance and Repair Workers-General and Registered Nurses when compared nationally. Executive Secretaries and Executive Administrative Assistants, Computer Systems Analysts, Computer User Support Specialists and Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers are easier to recruit here when compared nationwide. Customer Service Representatives, Retail Salespersons, Executive Secretaries and Executive Administrative Assistants, First-Line Supervisors of Office and Administrative Support Workers and Computer Systems Analysts are the easier-to-hire occupations in the Austin MSA.

Software Developers, Applications saw the largest year-to-year increase in Available Jobs Postings, followed by Computer Systems Engineers/Architects.

The annual median wages in this occupational category saw an increase of $3,490 from $79,980 in 2015 to $83,470 in 2016.

Computer and Mathematical Occupations saw approximately 170 more Available Job Postings compared to the same period last year.

Companies such as DELL, General Motors Corporation, ACCENTURE and IBM have seen a 100 or more year-to-year increase in postings under this category.

The Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell MSA, San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward MSA and Denver-Aurora-Lakewood MSA all have a higher hiring difficulty in this occupational category compared to the Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos MSA.

Pharmacy Technicians, Physical Therapists and Medical and Clinical Laboratory Technologists saw the largest year-to-year increase in Available Job Postings and the top employers posting for these positions are CVS Health, HCA-The Healthcare Company, Ascension Health and Scott & White. Critical Care Nurses, Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical and Licensed Vocational Nurses saw the largest decline in Available Job Postings.

The annual median wage for Healthcare Practitioners and Technical Occupations in the Austin MSA also decreased slightly from $60,740 in 2015 to $60,500 in 2016. All the top occupations in this category pay an annual median wage of more than $30,000 in the Austin MSA.

Healthcare Practitioners and Technical Occupations saw approximately 260 less Available Job Postings compared to the same period last year.

Most of the year-to-year increases in this occupational category are for Pharmacy Technicians, though the demand is relatively easy to fill in our region and typically requires a high school diploma plus moderate-on-the-job training. Compared nationally, the Austin MSA has a higher hiring difficulty for Registered Nurses, Critical Care Nurses, Physical Therapists, Radiologic Technologists, Dental Hygienists, Medical and Clinical Laboratory Technicians, Surgical Technologists and Cardiovascular Technologists and Technicians.
