INSIGHTS

  • Annual Median Wage for top two posted occupations in the Austin MSA have increased. The annual median wage for Software Developers, Applications increased from $105,150 to $107,330 and for Registered Nurses, it increased from $66,150 to $68,010. The Average Annual Median Wage increased for both the Computer and Mathematical Occupational and Healthcare Practitioners and Technical Occupational groups. Computer and Mathematical Occupations increased average wages from $83,470 to $86,280. Healthcare Practitioners and Technical Occupations increased average wages from $60,500 to $62,760.

  • Five of the Top 20 posted occupations in the Computer and Mathematical Occupational group now pay an annual median wage of over $100,000: Software Developers, Applications, Information Security Analysts, Software Developers, Systems Software, Computer and Information Research Scientists and Computer Network Architects.

  • 41,000 Available Job Postings during March 2018, about 1,100 more postings than March 2017.

  • Office and Administrative Support Occupations saw the largest decline in postings.

  • Business and Financial Operations Occupations (Management Analysts, Market Research Analysts and Marketing Specialists, Accountants, Business Operations Specialists, All Other and Human Resources Specialists) and Computer and Mathematical Occupations (Software Developers, Applications, Web Developers, Computer Systems Analysts, Computer User Support Specialists and Network and Computer Systems Administrators) and Management Occupations (Marketing Managers, General and Operations Managers, Managers, All Other, Sales Managers and Property, Real Estate, and Community Association Managers) saw strong growth in postings.

  • The occupational group that pays the highest Average Median Wage in the Austin MSA is Management Occupations, followed by Compputer and Mathematical Occupations, Architecture and Engineering Occupations, Legal Occupations, Business and Financial Operations Occupations and Healthcare Practitioners and Technical Occupations.

  • Microsoft Office is the top hard skill in demand.

  • The share of New Job Postings compared to Available Job Postings is approximately 47 percent in March 2018.

  • According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin MSA reported an unemployment rate of 3.0% or 36,000 unemployed in February 2018, lower than the 3.5% or 40,000 reported in February 2017. The current labor force for the Austin MSA is 1,188,500, an increase of 45,300 when compared to the same time last year.

  • In March 2018, 69 percent of Available Job Postings were Less than 60 days old.

  • More jobs ahead. Companies recently announced new location or expansion plans in the Austin MSA, representing about 520 plus jobs. The expansion list includes Valkyrie, Uber, TurnKey Vacation Rentals, TheWaveVR, Strangeworks, SpyCloud, Mythic and Double A Events. Spreetail (Lincoln, NE), REX Real Estate (Los Angeles, CA), Outdoorsy (San Francisco, CA) are the companies that have announced new location plans in Austin .

There were approximately 41,000 Available Job Postings during the March 2018 monthly reporting period, about 1,100 more postings when compared to March 2017.

About 7,600 or 19 percent of the Available Job Postings during the March reporting period fell under Computer and Mathematical Occupations. The Business and Financial Operations Occupations saw the largest increase in year-to-year postings.

The Major Occupational Groups that saw more than 200 year-to-year increases in Available Job Postings, when compared to March 2017, are Business and Financial Operations Occupations, Computer and Mathematical Occupations, Management Occupations and Architecture and Engineering Occupations. 47 percent or about 19,000 are New Job Postings.

According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin MSA reported an unemployment rate of 3.0% or 36,000 unemployed in February 2018, lower than the 3.5% or 40,000 reported in February 2017. Approximately 63% of unemployment insurance (UI) claimants that are actively seeking a job in Travis County have less than an associate's degree, according to Workforce Solutions Capital Area. According to the American Community Survey 2011-2015, there are 76,142 employed individuals living below the poverty line and 99,296 families living at less than 200 percent of poverty.

Software Developers, Applications, Retail Salespersons, Computer Systems Analysts, Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers, Managers, All Other and Management Analysts saw a 130 or more increase in year-to-year postings.

The Annual Median Wage decreased for the following occupations on this list: Retail Salespersons, First-Line Supervisors of Retails Sales Workers, Marketing Managers, Web Developers and Computer User Support Specialists.

Computer and Mathematical Occupations saw about 470 year-to-year Available Job Postings. Software Developers, Applications saw the greatest share of the year-to-year increase in Available Job Postings.

Computer Programmers saw the largest decline in year-to-year Available Job Postings.

The Washington-Arlington-Alexandria MSA, Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell MSA, Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington MSA, Boston-Cambridge-Newton MSA, Chicago-Naperville-Elgin MSA, Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington MSA and the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood MSA have a higher hiring difficulty in this occupational category when compared to the Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos MSA.
