INSIGHTS

  • The Austin MSA had approximately 5,100 more Available Job Postings than the number of unemployed for June 2018. There has been more Available Job Postings than the unemployed in the Austin MSA each month since May 2017.

  • New Job Postings show employers from diverse industries such as technology, non-profit, healthcare, retail and food delivery are hiring. Companies such as Goodwill Industries, Ascension Health, Target Corporation, Army, ACCENTURE, General Electric and UberEATS represent an increase of 80 or more New Job Postings compared to the same time last year.

  • 9,300 or 22 percent of the Available Job Postings during the June reporting period fell under Computer and Mathematical Occupations, representing the highest volume of Available Job Postings in this occupational category in years.

  • Approximately 46 percent or about 19,900 of job postings are New Job Postings with Computer and Mathematical Occupations, Business and Financial Operations Occupations and Management Occupations leading in this category.

  • According to the Travis County Poverty Brief, the American Community Survey 2012-2016 data shows that 32 percent or 355,874 of Travis County residents have an income under 200% of the poverty threshold. The Master Community Workforce Plan's top-line target is to ensure an additional 1,800-plus Austin residents currently in poverty receive training, credentialing, and are placed in jobs paying at least $40,000 in technology, healthcare and skilled trades between 2017-2021.

  • 60 percent of the approximate 17,200 unemployment insurance (UI) claimants that are actively seeking a job in Travis County have less than an associate's degree, according to Workforce Solutions Capital Area for FY 2017-2018.

  • More jobs ahead. Companies recently announced new location or expansion plans in the Austin MSA, representing almost 1,000 jobs. The expansion list includes Medici, Jask, GroupBy, General Motors, Elliott Electric Supply, Datical, Convey, Car2Go, Arrive Logistics and ALTR. Employers such as embark (Dallas, TX), FreshBox Farms (Millis, MA), Interstate Restoration (Fort Worth, TX), Koridor (Calgary, Canada) and Stonepeak Infrastructure Partners (New York, NY) are the companies that have announced new location plans in Austin.

There were approximately 43,200 Available Job Postings during the June 2018 monthly reporting period, about 1,500 more postings when compared to June 2017.

9,300 or 22 percent of the Available Job Postings during the June reporting period fell under Computer and Mathematical Occupations and had the largest year-to-year increases in postings. The Business and Financial Operations Occupations and Management Occupations also had significant increases in year-to-year postings.

The Major Occupational Groups that saw more than 200 year-to-year increases in Available Job Postings, when compared to June 2017, are Computer and Mathematical Occupations, Management Occupations, Business and Financial Operations Occupations and Architecture and Engineering Occupations.

Approximately 46 percent or about 19,900 of job postings are New Job Postings with Computer and Mathematical Occupations, Business and Financial Operations Occupations and Management Occupations leading in this category.

According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin MSA reported an unemployment rate of 3.2% or 38,100 unemployed in June 2018, with 5,200 more people unemployed when compared to the previous month. The unemployment rate was 3.3% or 37,600 back in June 2017. The current labor force for the Austin MSA is 1,192,100, an increase of 39,100 into our regions' labor force, when compared to the same time last year.

Software Developers, Applications, Marketing Managers, Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers, Computer Programmers, Management Analysts, Network and Computer Systems Administrators, Market Research Analysts and Marketing Specialists, Web Developers, Software Developers, Systems Software, and Computer Systems Engineers/Architects saw a 100 or more increase in year-to-year postings. The increases lean heavily towards technology-related jobs.

Computer and Mathematical Occupations saw about 1,600 year-to-year increase in Available Job Postings. Software Developers, Applications saw the greatest share of the year-to-year increase in Available Job Postings. Occupations that had a 100 or more increase in year-to-year postings were Computer Programmers, Network and Computer Systems Administrators, Web Developers, Software Developers, Systems Software and Computer Systems Engineers/Architects.

Companies that have posted 40 or more jobs under this occupational category are Visa, General Electric, DELL, Perficient, Inc., IBM, Conduent, Texas Education Agency and Home Depot,
