INSIGHTS

  • Many job openings, but fewer than a year ago. 39,100 Available Job Postings during June 2017, or 2,700 less compared to June 2016.

  • Job postings in June 2017 is lower than June of past three years. The Austin MSA saw more than 40,000 Available Job Postings in June of 2014, 2015 and 2016 but is below 40,000 in June 2017.

  • Demand for Tech talent remains high. Software Developers-Applications replaced Registered Nurses as the top posted occupation since March 2017. The annual median wage for Software Developers-Applications in the Austin MSA increased from $99,420 to $105,150, according to the data by the BLS.

  • Plenty of middle wage jobs available. Nine of the Top 20 occupations posted require less than an associate's degree as the typical education needed for entry, representing about 5,600 postings. All but two, Retail Salesperson and Maids and Housekeeping Cleaners, posted an annual median wage of $30,000 or more in the Austin MSA. Almost one-fifth of all Available Job Postings that require at least a high school diploma also pays an annual median wage of between $30,000 to $60,000.

  • Unemployment tops 36,000. According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin MSA reported an unemployment rate of 3.2% or 36,000 unemployed in May 2017.

  • More jobs ahead. Companies recently announced new location or expansion plans in the Austin MSA, about 3,165 jobs. The list includes Alegion, AYNI Brigade, CallFire, Digital Pharmacist, Facebook, Fringe Benefit Group, FS Builder Resources, HomeAway, Hyliion, MAP Health Management, Opcity, SOCi, TenantCloud, Veridia Diagnostics, ViaSat, Viridis Learning, Box, Dropoff, EPSG, eRelevance, ETS-Lindgren, Insys Therapeutics and Lepide Software.

There were approximately 39,100 Available Job Postings during the June 2017 monthly reporting period, a decrease of about 2,700 Available Job Postings compared to June 2016. About 7,200 or 18 percent of the Available Job Postings during the June reporting period fell under Computer and Mathematical Occupations. About 47 percent of the Available Job Postings are New Job Postings for June 2017.

The Major Occupational Groups that saw the largest decline in the volume of Available Job Postings compared to June 2016 are Sales and Related Occupations, Computer and Mathematical Occupations and Office and Administrative Support Occupations. Computer and Mathematical Occupations had the largest volume of New Job Postings for June 2017.

According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin MSA reported an unemployment rate of 3.2% or 36,000 unemployed in May 2017. This represents an increase of 3,600 unemployed compared to May 2016 which had a 2.9% unemployment rate or 32,400 unemployed. Approximately 65% of unemployment insurance (UI) claimants that are actively seeking a job in Travis County have less than an associate's degree, according to Workforce Solutions Capital Area.

Software Developers-Applications is again, the top occupation posted in the Austin MSA and its annual median wage increased from $99,420 to $105,150 according to the latest data released by the BLS.

Software Developers-Applications, Management Analysts, Marketing Managers, Computer Systems Engineers/Architects and Elementary School Teachers-Except Special Education all saw a 70 or more increase in year-to-year postings. Registered Nurses, Web Developers, First-Line Supervisors of Food Preparation and Serving Workers, Computer Systems Analysts and Network and Computer Systems Administrators saw a 150 or more decrease in year-to-year postings.

The chart below lists the top 20 unique available job postings and its hiring difficulty in the Austin – Round Rock – San Marcos MSA from May 14, 2017 to June 13, 2017.

Nine of the Top 20 occupations posted require less than an associate's degree as the typical education needed for entry. All but two, Retail Salesperson and Maids and Housekeeping Cleaners, posted an annual median wage of $30,000 or more in the Austin MSA.

Customer Service Representatives, Retail Salespersons, First-Line Supervisors of Office and Administrative Support Workers and Computer Systems Analysts are the easier-to-hire occupations in the Austin MSA. Computer Systems Engineers/Architects, Software Quality Assurance Engineers and Testers, Web Developers, Marketing Managers and Information Technology Project Managers are the job postings that more difficult to fill in our region but also require an associate's or bachelor's degree.

Software Developers, Applications saw the largest year-to-year increase in Available Jobs Postings, followed by Computer Systems Engineers/Architects. Web Developers, Computer Systems Analysts, Network and Computer Systems Administrators and Computer User Support Specialists saw the largest decline in Available Job Postings.

The annual median wages in this occupational category saw an increase of $3,490 from $79,980 in 2015 to $83,470 in 2016.

Computer and Mathematical Occupations saw approximately 460 less Available Job Postings compared to the same period last year.

The Denver-Aurora-Lakewood MSA has a higher hiring difficulty in this occupational category while the Pheonix-Mesa-Scottsdale MSA has a similar level of hiring difficulty when compared to the Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos MSA.

The chart below lists the top 20 unique available job postings under Healthcare Practitioners and Technical Occupations in the Austin – Round Rock – San Marcos MSA from May 14, 2017 to June 13, 2017.

Critical Care Nurses, Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical and Licensed Vocational Nurses saw the largest decline in Available Job Postings.

The annual median wage for Healthcare Practitioners and Technical Occupations in the Austin MSA also decreased slightly from $60,740 in 2015 to $60,500 in 2016. All the top occupations in this category pay an annual median wage of more than $30,000 in the Austin MSA.

Companies such as Seton Family of Hospitals, TX, Austin Medical Center, St. David's Medical Center and Scott & White have posted 50 or more year-to-year increase in postings under this category.

Healthcare Practitioners and Technical Occupations saw approximately 200 less Available Job Postings compared to the same period last year.

The highest hiring difficulty is for Cardiovascular Technologists and Technicians which require at least an associate's degree and has an annual median wage of $60,660.

Medical and Clinical Laboratory Technicians, Radiologic Technologists and Dentists, General saw a modest increase in year-to-year postings.
