INSIGHTS

  • There were approximately 41,000 Available Job Postings during the July 2018 monthly reporting period, 340 more postings when compared to July 2017.

  • 8,600 or 21 percent of the Available Job Postings during the July reporting period fell under Computer and Mathematical Occupations.

  • The Austin MSA had approximately 5,100 more Available Job Postings than the number of unemployed for June 2018. There has been more Available Job Postings than the unemployed in the Austin MSA each month since May 2017.

  • Approximately 42 percent or about 17,400 of job postings are New Job Postings with Computer and Mathematical Occupations and Business and Financial Operations Occupations leading in this category.

  • 15,100 or 37% of all Available Job Postings which pay between $30,000 to $65,000.

  • According to the Travis County Poverty Brief, the American Community Survey 2012-2016 data shows that 32 percent or 355,874 of Travis County residents have an income under 200% of the poverty threshold. The Master Community Workforce Plan's top-line target is to ensure an additional 1,800-plus Austin residents currently in poverty receive training, credentialing, and are placed in jobs paying at least $40,000 in technology, healthcare and skilled trades between 2017-2021.

  • 60 percent of the approximate 17,200 unemployment insurance (UI) claimants that are actively seeking a job in Travis County have less than an associate's degree, according to Workforce Solutions Capital Area for FY 2017-2018.

  • More jobs ahead. Opportunity Austin, the Austin Chamber’s five-year regional economic development program, made an aggressive bid to bring the Army Futures Command to Central Texas", landing a 500 job announcement in Austin for the Army's second headquarters in July 2018. Companies have recently announced new location or expansion plans in the Austin MSA, representing almost 1,150 jobs. The expansion list includes St. Croix Capital Corp., SparkCognition, ScaleFactor, Luminex, Insurance Zebra, HomeAway, Fluence Bioengineering and All Web Leads. Employers such as Visionary Fiber Technologies (San Marcos, TX), U.S. Army Futures Command (Arlington, VA), Moxie Solar (Davenport, IA), Kettle & Fire Bone Broth (San Francisco, CA), Fetch Package (Dallas, TX) and AEND Industies (Huntington Beach, CA) are the companies that have announced new location plans in Austin.

There were approximately 41,000 Available Job Postings during the July 2018 monthly reporting period, 340 more postings when compared to July 2017.

8,600 or 21 percent of the Available Job Postings during the July reporting period fell under Computer and Mathematical Occupations and had the largest year-to-year increases in postings. The Business and Financial Operations Occupations and Management Occupations also had significant increases in year-to-year postings.

The Major Occupational Groups that saw more than 100 year-to-year increases in Available Job Postings, when compared to July 2017, are Computer and Mathematical Occupations, Business and Financial Operations Occupations, Management Occupations, Architecture and Engineering Occupations and Protective Service Occupations.

Approximately 42 percent or about 17,400 of job postings are New Job Postings with Computer and Mathematical Occupations and Business and Financial Operations Occupations leading in this category.

According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin MSA reported an unemployment rate of 3.2% or 38,100 unemployed in June 2018, with 5,200 more people unemployed when compared to the previous month. The unemployment rate was 3.3% or 37,600 back in June 2017. The current labor force for the Austin MSA is 1,192,100, an increase of 39,100 into our regions' labor force, when compared to the same time last year.

Software Developers, Applications, Management Analysts, Marketing Managers, Computer Systems Engineers/Architects, Market Research Analysts and Marketing Specialists, Lawyers, Software Developers, Sysytems Software, Equal Opportunity Representatives and Officers and Human Resources Specialists saw a 85 or more increase in year-to-year postings.

Computer and Mathematical Occupations saw about 1,000 year-to-year increase in Available Job Postings. Software Developers, Applications saw the greatest share of the year-to-year increase in Available Job Postings. Occupations that had a 100 or more increase in year-to-year postings were Software Developers, Applications, Computer Systems Engineers/Architects and Software Developers, Systems Software.

Companies that have posted 40 or more jobs under this occupational category in our region are Visa, IBM, DELL, EPACE TECHNOLOGIES and Texas Education Agency.
