INSIGHTS

  • About 59 percent of all Available Job Postings for 2017 required some form of postsecondary education as the level of education needed for entry into the job posted.

  • 35,500 Available Job Postings during January 2018, about 740 less postings than January 2017. Office and Administrative Support Occupations saw a 670 decrease in year-to-year Available Job Postings, followed by Computer and Mathematical Occupations which had 340 decrease. Available Job Postings in January has historically been lower than other months of the year, followed by December.

  • Education, Training and Library Occupations continues to see an increase of year-to-year postings by about 280, mostly for Teacher Assistants, Preschool Teachers, Elementary School Teachers, Secondary School Teachers and Special Education Teachers. This is followed by Healthcare Practitioners and Technical Occupations which saw a 260 year-to-year increase, mostly for Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical and Licensed Vocational Nurses and Speech-Language Pathologists.

  • Microsoft Office is a hard skill tracked in this most recent report and is an important hard skill to acquire based on the demand seen.

  • The share of New Job Postings compared to Available Job Postings is approximately 41 percent in January 2018.

  • According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin MSA reported an unemployment rate of 2.7% or 30,800 unemployed in December 2017, lower than the 3.2% or 35,500 back in December 2016.

  • In January 2017, 45 percent of Available Job Postings were Less than 30 days old. In January 2018, only 39 percent of Available Job Postings are Less than 30 days old, meaning that employers are having to post jobs for a longer period of time.

  • The level of hiring difficulty for Software Developers, Applications is the same as Registered Nurses.

  • More jobs ahead. Companies recently announced new location or expansion plans in the Austin MSA, representing about 409 plus jobs. The expansion list includes Hyliion (Pittsburgh, PA), LKQ, Parsley Energy, Silicon Laboratories, TrendKite and WeWork.

There were approximately 35,500 Available Job Postings during the January 2018 monthly reporting period, about 740 less postings when compared to January 2017.

About 5,900 or 17 percent of the Available Job Postings during the January reporting period fell under Computer and Mathematical Occupations, which also saw the largest decline in year-to-year Available Job Postings.

The Major Occupational Groups that saw the largest increases in the volume of Available Job Postings, when compared to January 2017, are Education, Training and Library Occupations and Healthcare Practitioners and Technical Occupations. 41 percent or 14,500 are New Job Postings.

According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin MSA reported an unemployment rate of 2.7% or 30,800 unemployed in December 2017, lower than the 3.2% or 35,500 back in December 2016. Approximately 63% of unemployment insurance (UI) claimants that are actively seeking a job in Travis County have less than an associate's degree, according to Workforce Solutions Capital Area. According to the American Community Survey 2011-2015, there are 76,142 employed individuals living below the poverty line and 99,296 families living at less than 200 percent of poverty.

Registered Nurses and Retail Salespersons both saw a 100 or more increase in year-to-year postings. Office Clerks, General, Customer Service Representatives, Laborers and Freight, Stock, and Material Movers, Hand and Network and Computer Systems Administrators had a 100 or more decrease in year-to-year postings.

Retail Salespersons and Maids and Housekeeping Cleaners posted an annual median wage of less than $30,000 in the Austin MSA. First-Line positions in retail, food preparation and office administration do pay an annual median wage of close to $40,000 and above, it would also require some years of related work experience. First-Line Supervisors of Retail Sales Workers is the hardest to fill in the First-Line positions.

Information Technology Project Managers and Computer and Information Research Scientists and Software Developers, Applications saw the largest year-to-year increase in Available Job Postings.

Network and Computer Systems Administrators, Web Developers and Computer Systems Analysts saw the largest decline in year-to-year Available Job Postings.
