  • Approximately 35,700 Available Job Postings during the monthly reporting period, a decrease of 2,500 postings compared to the same period last year.
  • Largest year-to-year decreases in the Sales and Related Occupations, Computer and Mathematical Occupations followed by Business and Financial Operations Occupations.
  • Several companies recently announced new location or expansion plans in Austin, involving more than 1,930 jobs. The list includes Sync1 Systems, Creative Alignments, Facebook, Intersys Consulting, Ledcor Technical Services, Manna Freight Systems, Onit, Performance Services, Samsung Austin Semiconductor, Snap Kitchen and Superior HealthPlan (Centene Corp.).

There were approximately 35,700 Available Job Postings during the December 2016 monthly reporting period, a decrease of about 2,500 Available Job Postings compared to December 2015. About 6,500 or 18 percent of the Available Job Postings during the November reporting period fell under Computer and Mathematical Occupations.

Other occupational groups not reflected in this report that account for another 3,500 Available Job Openings are Architecture and Engineering Occupations (3%), Construction and Extraction Occupations (3%), Healthcare Support Occupations (2%) and Education, Training, and Library Occupations (2%), representing approximately 10% of Available Job Postings.

Building and Grounds Cleaning and Maintenance Occupations and Healthcare Practioners and Technical Occupations are the two occupational groups that saw an increase of 150 or more postings compared to the same time last year.

According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin MSA reported an unemployment rate of 3.0% or 33,700 unemployed in November 2016. The Austin MSA reported an annual job growth rate of 2.0% or 19,500 net new jobs in November 2016, down from 2.20% or 21,200 net new jobs in October 2016. Austin dropped from being the 20th fastest growing major metro to 25th place in November 2016. Education and Health Services added the most jobs (4.3% or 8,800) in the past year. The fastest growing industry was Construction and Natural Resources (6.6% or 3,800). Manufacturing jobs declined by 2.7% or 23,400, over the last 12 months.

Austin's total personal income grew by 7.2% in 2015 and has the 4th fastest growth rate among major metros, after San Jose, Denver and San Francisco. Austin has seen strong gains in average earnings per job at $60,805 in 2015, which is up 4.4% over 2014.

Approximately 65% of unemployment insurance (UI) claimants that are actively seeking a job in Travis County have less than an associate's degree, according to Workforce Solutions Capital Area.

Note: The data for December 2016 would be the sum of all posted ads from November 14, 2016 to December 13, 2016. This reference period is aligned to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) unemployment job search time period to provide a more accurate comparison of labor supply and labor demand.

The total number of Available Job Postings was 30,360 in December 2012 and have risen to 35,700 in December 2016. Of the 35,700 job postings, about half are New Job Postings. Of the Available Job Postings, about 79% are for full-time positions, 12% are part-time positions, 8% are contract positions and less than 1% are for internships.

First-Line Supervisors of Retail Sales Workers, Computer User Support Specialists, Retail Salespersons, Network and Computer Systems Administrators and Computer Systems Analysts all saw a 100 or more year-to-year decrease in postings.

Less than 1% or 400 of the Available Job Postings, not reflected in this report, are for internship positions. This is an approximate 30 percent year-to-year decrease.

Almost all the occupations, except Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers and Web Developers, that indicate a difficulty-to-fill level of 80 or more would require a Bachelor's degree as the typical education needed for entry. It is easier to hire Computer Systems Analysts in our region, when compared nationally.

Most of the year-to-year decreases in this occupational category are from Computer User Support Specialists, Network and Computer Systems Administrators, Computer Systems Analysts, Web Developers and Computer Systems Engineers/Architects.

The Denver-Aurora-Broomfield MSA, Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington MSA and San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont MSA have a higher hiring difficulty in this occupational category compared to the Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos MSA while the San Antonio-New Braunfels MSA, San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara MSA and Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue MSA have a lower hiring difficulty.

The Healthcare Practitioners and Technical Occupations saw a 200 volume increase in postings compared to the same time last year. Surgical Technologists, Radiologic Technologists and Pharmacy Technicians saw 50 or more year-to-year increase in postings.

However, the demand for Pharmacy Technicians is easier to fill in our region.
