INSIGHTS

  • There were approximately 45,700 Available Job Postings during the August 2018 monthly reporting period, 4,300 more postings when compared to August 2017.
  • 17,000 or 37% of all Available Job Postings pay an annual median wage of between $30,000 to $65,000 in the Austin MSA for August 2018. Of these 17,000 posted jobs, 4,200 or 25 percent would require more than a high school diploma but less than a bachelor's degree while 9,800 or 58 percent would require a high school diploma or less. The top 10 posted occupations or approximately 6,100 postings, in this annual median wage range of $30,000 to $65,000 category, all require an entry level education of less than an associate's degree. The region's Master Community Workforce Plan's top-line target is to ensure that in the five years between 2017-2021, an additional 1,800-plus Austin residents currently in poverty receive training, credentialing, and are placed in jobs paying at least $40,000 in technology, healthcare and skilled trades. Austin added 30,000 net new jobs in the 12 months ending in July, making Austin the 11th fastest growing major metro.
  • 60 percent of the approximate 17,200 unemployment insurance (UI) claimants in FY 2018 that are actively seeking a job in Travis County have less than an associate's degree, according to Workforce Solutions Capital Area.
  • 9,000 or 20 percent of the Available Job Postings during the August reporting period fell under Computer and Mathematical Occupations.
  • Approximately 41 percent or about 18,700 of job postings are New Job Postings with Computer and Mathematical Occupations, Management Occupations and Business and Financial Operations Occupations leading in this category.
  • According to the Travis County Poverty Brief, the American Community Survey 2012-2016 data shows that 32 percent or 355,874 of Travis County residents have an income under 200% of the poverty threshold.
  • More jobs ahead. Opportunity Austin, the Austin Chamber’s five-year regional economic development program, made an aggressive bid to bring the Army Futures Command to Central Texas", landing a 500 job announcement in Austin for the Army's second headquarters in August 2018. Companies have recently announced new location or expansion plans in the Austin MSA, representing almost 680 jobs. The expansion list includes Social Solutions, Skout Deals, Pingboard, Paradigm Metals, New Knowledge, Infinite io, Buc-ee's and BitMED. Employers such as Sibu Sura Chocolates (Myersville, MD), Ladder (Boston, MA) and Disco (Houston, TX) are the companies that have announced new location plans in Austin.

There were approximately 45,700 Available Job Postings during the August 2018 monthly reporting period, 4,300 more postings when compared to August 2017. 9,000 or 20 percent of the Available Job Postings during the August reporting period fell under Computer and Mathematical Occupations and had the largest year-to-year increases in postings.

The Sales and Related Occupations, Business and Financial Operations Occupations and Management Occupations also had significant increases in year-to-year postings.

The Major Occupational Groups that saw more than 400 year-to-year increases in Available Job Postings, when compared to August 2017, are Computer and Mathematical Occupations, Sales and Related Occupations, Business and Financial Operations Occupations, Management Occupations and Architecture and Engineering Occupations.

Approximately 41 percent or about 18,700 of job postings are New Job Postings with Computer and Mathematical Occupations, Management Occupations and Business and Financial Operations Occupations leading in this category.

According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin MSA reported an unemployment rate of 3.1% or 36,600 unemployed in July 2018, with 1,500 less people unemployed when compared to the previous month. The unemployment rate was 3.3% or 38,100 back in July 2017. The current labor force for the Austin MSA is 1,186,300, an increase of 28,000 into our regions' labor force, when compared to the same time last year.

The Austin MSA had approximately 8,300 more Available Job Postings than the number of unemployed for July 2018. There has been more Available Job Postings than the unemployed in the Austin MSA each month since May 2017.

Software Developers-Applications, Retail Salespersons, Marketing Managers, Management Analysts, Web Developers, Software Developers-Systems Software, Computer Systems Engineers/Architects and Software Quality Assurance Engineers and Testers saw a 130 or more increase in year-to-year postings.

Computer and Mathematical Occupations saw about 1,450 year-to-year increase in Available Job Postings. Software Developers, Applications saw the greatest share of the year-to-year increase in Available Job Postings. Occupations that had a 130 or more increase in year-to-year postings were Software Developers-Applications, Web Developers, Software Developers-Systems Software, Computer Systems Engineers/Architects and Software Quality Assurance Engineers and Testers. Companies that have posted 40 or more jobs under this occupational category in our region are Visa, Advanced Micro Devices, IBM, Covance, DELL, Deloitte and Home Depot.
