INSIGHTS

  • 47 percent of all Available Job Postings are New Job Postings for the month of April 2018. Transportation and Material Moving Occupations, Installation, Maintenance and Repair Occupations, Food Preparation and Serving Related Occupations and Office and Administrative Support Occupations are the major occupational groups whose New Job Postings comprised 50 percent or more of their respective Available Job Postings.

  • 43,400 Available Job Postings during April 2018, about 1,600 more postings than April 2017.

  • Five of the Top 20 posted occupations in the Computer and Mathematical Occupational group now pay an annual median wage of over $100,000: Software Developers, Applications, Information Security Analysts, Software Developers, Systems Software, Computer and Information Research Scientists and Computer Network Architects.

  • According to the Travis County Poverty Brief, the American Community Survey 2012-2016 data shows that 32 percent or 355,874 of Travis County residents have an income under 200% of the poverty threshold. The Master Community Workforce Plan's top-line target is to ensure an additional 1,800-plus Austin residents currently in poverty receive training, credentialing, and are placed in jobs paying at least $40,000 in technology, healthcare and skilled trades between 2017-2021.

  • 48 percent of Available Job Postings from January 2018 to April 2018 require a bachelor's degree or more as the typical education needed for entry into the occupations posted. This is a slight increase from 2017.

  • More jobs ahead. Companies recently announced new location or expansion plans in the Austin MSA, representing about 1,490 plus jobs. The expansion list includes CCC Information Services, HNI Healthcare, MineralSoft, OnePointe Solutions, Oracle Corp., Pathway Vet Alliance, Redgate Software and Rooster Teeth. DevicePharm (Minneapolis, MN), Employers Insurance Group (Reno, NV) and PIMCO (Newport Beach, CA) are the companies that have announced new location plans in Austin.

There were approximately 43,400 Available Job Postings during the April 2018 monthly reporting period, about 1,600 more postings when compared to April 2017.

About 8,300 or 19 percent of the Available Job Postings during the April reporting period fell under Computer and Mathematical Occupations. The Management Occupations saw the largest increase in year-to-year postings.

The Major Occupational Groups that saw more than 100 year-to-year increases in Available Job Postings, when compared to April 2017, are Management Occupations, Computer and Mathematical Occupations, Architecture and Engineering Occupations and Business and Financial Operations Occupations. Approximately 47 percent or about 20,400 of job postings are New Job Postings.

Approximately 63% of unemployment insurance (UI) claimants that are actively seeking a job in Travis County have less than an associate's degree, according to Workforce Solutions Capital Area. According to the Travis County Poverty Brief, the American Community Survey 2012-2016 data shows that 32 percent or 355,874 of Travis County residents have an income under 200% of the poverty threshold. According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin MSA reported an unemployment rate of 2.8% or 32,800 unemployed in April 2018, slightly lower than the 2.9% or 33,400 reported in April 2017. The current labor force for the Austin MSA is 1,191,200, an increase of 41,900 when compared to the same time last year.

Software Developers, Applications, Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers, Marketing Managers, Retail Salespersons, Market Research Analysts and Marketing Specialists, Management Analysts and Managers, All Other saw a 130 or more increase in year-to-year postings.

Computer and Mathematical Occupations saw about 560 year-to-year increase in Available Job Postings. Software Developers, Applications saw the greatest share of the year-to-year increase in Available Job Postings.
