Honoring Black-Owned Businesses

As we close out Black History Month, we wanted to highlight three black-owned and/or black-led businesses that we are proud to call members of the Austin Chamber of Commerce. Read on to learn more!

  • Word of Mouth Catering

Word of Mouth catering is owned and operated by Corpus Christi native Leslie Moore. After moving to Austin in 1969 to study engineering at the University of Texas, his pivot towards food & beverage came with a position at Headliner’s Club, and then an impressive tenure with Tarry House.

After his time with Tarry House, Moore wanted to go into the business himself, and met fellow catering entrepreneur Rebecca Wallace Ford, and together they merged into the original Word of Mouth Catering. Ford has since left the company, but Moore maintains his ownership and operation of a business that has catered to politicians, celebrities, and countless weddings. He launched Word of Mouth Bakery in 2015.

“Catering is a very personal thing,” Ford said to the Austin American-Statesman. “We were part of people’s most special days.”

You can check out Word of Mouth’s main office at 5002 Burleson Road.

  • Hoover's Cooking

“Hoover’s cooking is Texas cooking.” Founded by native East Austinite and fifth-generation Texan Hoover Alexander, this restaurant has Texas as the inspiration for the entire menu. Hoover grew up visiting his family farm in Utley to pick fresh fruits and vegetables for a true farm-to-table experience. He made sure to carry that childhood memory into his cooking to this day, and has developed deep and long-lasting relationships with area farmers.

Hoover’s passion for food began at the Night Hawk, which he frequented while attending the University of Texas. He began working there and soon moved on to essential Austin institutions such as Toulouse, Chez Fred, and Good Eats Café before founding Hoover’s Cooking. Hoover’s now combines the Southern, Tex-Mex, BBQ and Cajun cuisines into one delicious menu, all down the street from where he grew up.

You can visit Hoover’s Cooking at 2002 Manor Rd.
