Workshop: “Writing Soul in a Broken World”
Hosted by Fairfield University MFA faculty members Phil Klay and Matt Gallagher, the colloquium will offer participants an immersive experience rooted in craft, conversation, and community. Attendees will engage in readings and discussions and take part in generative writing workshops designed to explore shared themes in an intimate, collaborative setting. Coffee, lunch, and a closing reception will be provided, and there is no cost to attend.

Phil Klay – Renowned writer and U.S. Marine Corps veteran
Phil Klay won the 2014 National Book Award for Fiction for his debut work, Redeployment. His novel Missionaries was named a top book of 2020 by The Wall Street Journal and by former President Barack Obama. His writing has appeared in major outlets, including The New York Times, The Atlantic, and The New Yorker. He teaches fiction at Fairfield University.
Meet Phil
Matt Gallagher – Acclaimed author and U.S. Army veteran
Matt Gallagher is the author of four books, including the novels Daybreak and Youngblood, a finalist for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize. He’s also covered the ongoing conflict in Ukraine as a correspondent for Esquire and Arrowsmith Journal. Gallagher teaches in the MFA program at Fairfield University.
