After a lot of anticipation, CapMetro is now accepting Tap to Pay on Buses! On all buses, riders can now ride hassle free without fare card or payment app. Simply tap a contactless credit/debit card or digital phone wallet (American Express is not accepted). This feature allows the agency to meet the demand of our customers and the offer updated transit technology. CapMetro will automatically calculate your fare, ensuring riders never pay more than $2.50 a day for standard fare. Frequent riders will still receive the most benefits by using either the Umo app or the Reloadable Fare Card, including both daily and monthly fare caps and in-store wallet reloads.

By removing confusion behind digital and physical signups, fare payments can “transcend language and currency barriers [...] making public transport more accessible.”(modeshift.com) Tap to Pay technology was in testing for the months before launch and is just one piece of creating a better transit system for the Central Texas region. New fareboxes for riders who prefer cash are set to come out mid- 2026 and the new Customer Experience hub outlines more exciting updates on the horizon.
