Austin is ranked second on the Milken Institute's Best-Performing Cities report for 2022. This is an improvement of one spot from the previous three years.

The Milken Institute’s Best-Performing Cities 2022 compares economic performance among diverse metro areas across the United States. The index ranks cities on various metrics, including jobs, wages, salaries, and technology output. It's designed to help the public and private sectors evaluate and compare cities throughout the nation.

The top five in the large city category:
1. Provo-Orem, UT
2. Austin-Round Rock, TX

3. Salt Lake City, UT
4. Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale, AZ
5. Palm Bay-Melbourne-Titusville, FL

The report notes Austin has had significant growth in the tech sector and has an exceptional talent base to pull from.

"Established tech companies and newer businesses alike are flocking to Austin for its lack of corporate and state tax, ample space for expansion and development, and highly
educated workforce. The University of Texas at Austin is a key part of Austin’s economy and culture, and local labs account for major investments in R&D. These trends have helped make Austin a new tech and entrepreneurial hub, home to companies such as Dell, Apple, IBM, Oracle, and Tesla. However, growth was not limited to tech giants. In 2020, 619 new tech companies were established in Austin, which translates to roughly 6,000 jobs."
