Insights

Burning Glass made improvements to more efficiently identify expired job postings and this resulted in fewer "available jobs" before stabilizing at a new level as of January 23, 2022. Available job postings historically did not change. The time series experienced a one-time downward shift due to a better methodology.

Job Postings measured in this report refer to the employers who are actively advertising online, it is not a representation of Job Openings, which measures all positions that are open (not filled) on the last business day of the month.

There were approximately 83,000 Available Job Postings during the September 2022 monthly reporting period, a 14% decrease from 94,600 postings when compared to August 2022. There were 31,076 New (first-time) Job Postings, a decrease of 3,782 first-time postings when compared to the previous month. New (first-time) Job Postings in September 2022 represented 37 percent of all Available Job Postings – the same as the prior month. Both the Dallas and Houston metros also saw a similar percentage decrease in their new job postings (within +/- 1 percentage points).

Approximately 14 percent or 11,930 of all Available Job Postings during the September 2022 reporting period fell under Management Occupations while 11,626 Available Job Postings fell under Computer and Mathematical Occupations, showing continued strong demand for experienced or senior talent and tech talent in our region.

There are currently about 5,700 postings indicating vaccination requirements, or mentions of vaccination requirements, a decrease of approximately 800 postings compared to the previous month of August 2022. Most of the vaccination mentions are posted by companies like Visa, Accenture, KPMG, Apple, and Kyndryl.

Approximately 6,972 postings offered "signing bonuses", a decrease of 1,057 less postings when compared to the previous month.

Thirty-eight percent or 31,200 of Available Job Postings pay an annual median wage between $30,000 to $65,000. Of these, 59 percent or 18,3000 will require a high school diploma as the entry-level education, and 14 percent or 4,200 will require a bachelor's degree.

There are about 700 internship positions posted, in-person or remote. The top three companies with the most postings are Advanced Micro Devices, Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc, and Emerson Electric Company.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Austin MSA reported the lowest unemployment rate in the state again, at 3.0% in August 2022. The total number of unemployed in the Austin MSA is about 40,500. In August 2022, there were 42,500 more available job postings than the unemployed.

In September 2022, the Austin region saw a total of about 415 jobs announced through new relocations or expansion plans. Better Night (San Diego, CA), BSU (Ithaca, NY), and Ziegenfelder (Wheeling, WV) are the companies that have announced new location plans, creating over 160 new jobs in Austin. The expansion list representing over 255 jobs includes 4M Analytics, Flex, Form Bio, and Pet Honesty.
