Insights

Due to a comprehensive revision of the HWOL Index and HWOL Data Series, there will be changes in the volume as a result of this revision. The majority of the change in volume was caused by the removal of the bulk of the anonymous ads. Please note that the HWOL Data Series has been revised back to January 2015.

Job Postings measured in this report refers to the employers who are actively advertising online, it is not a representation of Job Openings, which measures all positions that are open (not filled) on the last business day of the month.
There were approximately 66,500 Available Job Postings during the November 2020 monthly reporting period, an increase of 4,000 postings compared to the previous month. There were 23,200 New (first-time) Job Postings, a decrease of 1,900 postings compared to the previous month. New (first-time) Job Postings in November 2020 represented 34 percent of Available Job Postings, a decreasing share when compared to previous months, as employers are posting less new jobs.
13 percent or about 8,700 of the Available Job Postings during the November reporting period fell under Computer and Mathematical Occupations. There were 3,400 New (first-time) Job Postings for Computer and Mathematical Occupations, almost one-third were for Software Developers-Applications.
The ad postings for top occupation Software Developers-Applications have decreased quite substantially in the past few months and it is an occupation that has greater remote work flexibility. The share of Computer and Mathematical Occupational Group ad postings have decreased and the increases are seen in Sales and Related and Healthcare Practitioners and Technical Occupational Groups. Postings in healthcare for Registered Nurses, Nursing Assistants, Medical Assistants and Home Health Aides are seeing a rise again, most likely due to an expected increase of coronavirus-related cases.
According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin MSA reported an unemployment rate of 5.1% or 63,700 unemployed in October 2020, a decrease of 17,100 people unemployed when compared to the previous month of September 2020. When compared to October 2019, there are 37,300 more people unemployed this October. The unemployment rate was higher at 6.3% or 80,000 unemployed in September 2020.
The top 5 New (first-time) Job Postings in November 2020 were for Software Developers-Applications, Sales Representatives-Wholesale and Manufacturing, Registered Nurses, Retail Salespersons and Managers, All Other.
Employers such as Hospital Corporation of America, The University of Texas, IBM, Ascension Health, Baylor Scott & White Health, Anthem Blue Cross and Dell had the most New (first-time) Job Postings in November 2020.
More jobs ahead. Companies have recently announced new relocation or expansion plans in the Austin MSA, representing a total of about 1,030 jobs. Jump Trading (Chicago, IL), Iron Ox (San Carlos, CA), Assurely (New York, NY) and *VC(San Francisco, CA) are the companies that have announced new location plans, creating 90 new jobs in Austin. The expansion list representing 940 new jobs includes Zynga, ZenBusiness, VORAGO Technologies, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Realtor.com, Jump Trading, Hellas Construction, Freedom Solar Power, ClosedLoop.ai and ActivTrak.

The data for November 2020 would be the sum of all posted ads from October 14, 2020 to November 13, 2020. This reference period is aligned to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) unemployment job search time period to provide a more accurate comparison of labor supply and labor demand.
