Insights

Burning Glass made improvements to more efficiently identify expired job postings and this resulted in fewer "available jobs" before stabilizing at a new level as of January 23, 2022. Available job postings historically did not change. The time series experienced a one-time downward shift. This is a change due to a better methodology.
Job Postings measured in this report refer to the employers who are actively advertising online, it is not a representation of Job Openings, which measures all positions that are open (not filled) on the last business day of the month.
There were approximately 90,700 available job postings during the May 2022 monthly reporting period. There were 44,700 New (first-time) Job Postings. New (first-time) Job Postings in May 2022 represented 49 percent of all Available Job Postings and this is a significant increase when compared to the previous month as employers, both local and outside our market, are posting more jobs in our region.
13 percent or 12,200 of all Available Job Postings during the May 2022 reporting period fell under Computer and Mathematical Occupations while 11,800 Available Job Postings fell under Management Occupations, showing continued strong demand for experienced or senior talent and tech talent in our region. For the past eight months, Computer and Mathematical postings had fallen behind the Management occupational group as the occupational category with the most online postings but in May 2022, Computer and Mathematical regained its leading position.
Recently released data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) for the Austin MSA shows that the annual median wages for Educational Instruction and Library Occupations, Healthcare Practitioners and Technical Occupations, Construction and Extraction Occupations, Computer and Mathematical Occupations, and Legal Occupations saw the highest year-to-year growth. The change is not yet reflected in the job postings below as Burning Glass has yet to update its information.
There are currently about 5,200 postings indicating vaccination requirements or mentions, a slight decline when compared to the previous month of April 2022.
7,000 postings offered "signing bonuses", an increase of 800 more postings when compared to the previous month. Registered Nurses, Software Developers, and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers are the top three occupations that would see more signing bonuses offered in their job postings
37 percent or 33,400 of Available Job Postings pay an annual median wage between $30,000 to $65,000. Of these, 58 percent or 19,500 will require a high school diploma as the entry-level education, and 15 percent or 4,900 will require a bachelor's degree.
There are about 880 internship positions posted, in-person or remote, 110 less postings than the previous month. The top three companies with the most postings are tech industry-related, Advanced Micro Devices and Inc., Intel Corporation, and Flex International USA.
According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin MSA reported the lowest unemployment rate in the state again, at 2.5% in April 2022. The total number of unemployed in the Austin MSA is about 33,900.
More jobs ahead. In May 2022, the Austin metro region saw a total of about 535 jobs announced through new relocation or expansion plans. CertifiD (Grand Rapids, MI), Jackalope Games (Hangzhou, China), and Valex Corp. (Ventura, CA) are the companies that have announced new location plans, creating about 115 new jobs in Austin. The expansion list representing 420 jobs, includes Falcon Structures, GSC Architects, Infinitum Electric, Mothership, Optii Solutions, and Wise.
