Insights

Burning Glass made improvements to more efficiently identify expired job postings and this resulted in fewer "available jobs" before stabilizing at a new level as of January 23, 2022. Available job postings historically did not change. The time series experienced a one-time downward shift due to a better methodology.
For this reporting period, LightCast implemented additional data patches to improve accuracy and eliminate duplicate job postings. These patches also resulted in fewer “available jobs” due to better methodology.

Job Postings measured in this report refer to the employers who are actively advertising online, it is not a representation of Job Openings, which measures all positions that are open (not filled) on the last business day of the month.

There were approximately 96,000 Available Job Postings during the July 2022 monthly reporting period, a significant decrease from 119,600 postings when compared to June 2022. There were 33,516 New (first-time) Job Postings, a decrease of 15,584 first-time postings when compared to the previous month. New (first-time) Job Postings in July 2022 represented 35 percent of all Available Job Postings. Both the Dallas and Houston metros also saw a similar percentage decrease in their available job postings.

Approximately 15 percent or 13,973 of all Available Job Postings during the July 2022 reporting period fell under Management Occupations while 13,953 Available Job Postings fell under Computer and Mathematical Occupations, showing continued strong demand for experienced or senior talent and tech talent in our region.

There are currently about 6,700 postings indicating vaccination requirements, or mentions of vaccination requirements, an increase of 112 postings compared to the previous month of June 2022. Most of the vaccination mentions are posted by companies like Apple, Accenture, Intel, Visa, and Paypal.

Approximately 8,900 postings offered "signing bonuses", a decrease of 100 less postings when compared to the previous month.

Thirty-seven percent or 35,700 of Available Job Postings pay an annual median wage between $30,000 to $65,000. Of these, 58 percent or 20,800 will require a high school diploma as the entry-level education, and 13 percent or 4,700 will require a bachelor's degree.

There are about 640 internship positions posted, in-person or remote. The top three companies with the most postings are Advanced Micro Devices, Intel Corporation, and Walgreens.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Austin MSA reported the lowest unemployment rate in the state again, at 3.1% in June 2022. The total number of unemployed in the Austin MSA is about 42,300. In June 2022, there were 53,500 more available job postings than the unemployed.

More jobs ahead. In July 2022, the Austin metro region saw a total of about 1,015 jobs announced through new relocation or expansion plans. GAF Energy (San Jose, CA ), Mondee, (San Mateo, CA), TA Associates, (Boston, MA), Topl (Houston, TX) are the companies that have announced new location plans, creating about 335 new jobs in Austin. The expansion list representing 690 jobs, includes Babson Diagnostics, Cognizant, H-E-B, LTD Material, Opifex, PayPal, Peak6, Spruce Services, and Zekelman Industries.
