Insights

  • Burning Glass made improvements to more efficiently identify expired job postings and this resulted in fewer "available jobs" before stabilizing at a new level as of January 23, 2022. Available job postings historically did not change. The time series experienced a one-time downward shift. This is a change due to a better methodology.

  • Job Postings measured in this report refers to the employers who are actively advertising online, it is not a representation of Job Openings, which measures all positions that are open (not filled) on the last business day of the month.

  • There were approximately 74,500 available job postings during the February 2022 monthly reporting period. There were 30,800 New (first-time) Job Postings. New (first-time) Job Postings in February 2022 represented 41 percent of all Available Job Postings and this is an increase when compared to the previous month as employers are posting more new (first-time) jobs in the region.

  • 15 percent or 10,800 of all Available Job Postings during the February 2022 reporting period fell under the Management Occupations while 9,700 Available Job Postings fell under Computer and Mathematical Occupations, showing continued strong demand for experienced or senior talent and tech talent in our region. For the past six months, Computer and Mathematical postings have fallen behind the Management occupational group as employers are also posting open Computer and Mathematical jobs outside our market because there are more opportunities to work remotely with these occupations.

  • According to Community Impact Newspaper, "a study conducted by the Charles Butt Foundation found that 68% of teachers surveyed considered leaving the profession in 2021, compared to 58% in 2020." The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has also recently announced the creation of a Teacher Vacancy Task Force. While Preschool Teachers continue to see the highest demand, the second-highest job posting under the Education, Training, and Library occupational group is now Middle School Teachers which has also seen an increase in postings when compared to the previous year, followed by Substitute Teachers, Short-term, Teaching Assistants (Except Postsecondary) and Elementary School Teachers.

  • There are currently about 3,400 postings indicating vaccination requirements or mentions, no change when compared to the previous month of January 2022.

  • There were 5,200 postings that offered "signing bonuses" a slight decrease when compared to the previous month.

  • 38 percent or 28,200 of Available Job Postings pay an annual median wage between $30,000 to $65,000. Of these, 59 percent or 16,700 will require a high school diploma as the entry-level education, and 15 percent or 4,200 will require a bachelor's degree.

  • There are about 850 internship positions posted, in-person or remote. Companies such as Advanced Micro Devices, Walgreens, NBC, Deloitte, and IBM have posted multiple internship positions.

  • According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin MSA and the Armarillo MSA both reported the lowest unemployment rate in the state, at 3.3% in January 2022.

  • More jobs ahead. In February 2022, the Austin metro region saw a total of about 5,100 jobs announced through new relocation or expansion plans. CellLink (San Carlos, CA), Coco Delivery (Los Angeles, CA), Deere & Company (Moine, IL), Infarm (Berlin, Germany), Onx Homes (Carrollton, TX), Sabey Data Centers (Seattle, WA), Stream It (Las Vegas, NV), and TikTok (Culver City, CA) are the companies that have announced new location plans, creating about 3,450 new jobs in Austin. The expansion list representing 1,650 jobs, includes American Canning, Ascension Seton Medical Center, Atmosphere, Captain Experiences, Emerson, Enboarder, FloSports, Innovative Solutions, LendFriend Home Loans, Overhaul, SourceDay, Southside Market & BBQ, St. David's Kyle Hospital, St. David's Leanders Hospital, St. David's North Austin Medical Center, Steadily, Sykes Industries, and Zoho.
