Insights

Due to a comprehensive revision of the HWOL Index and HWOL Data Series, there will be changes in the volume as a result of this revision. The majority of the change in volume was caused by the removal of the bulk of the anonymous ads. Please note that the HWOL Data Series has been revised back to January 2015.

Job Postings measured in this report refers to the employers who are actively advertising online, it is not a representation of Job Openings, which measures all positions that are open (not filled) on the last business day of the month.
There were approximately 62,800 Available Job Postings during the December 2020 monthly reporting period, a decrease of 3,700 postings compared to the previous month. There were 22,000 New (first-time) Job Postings, a decrease of 1,200 postings compared to the previous month. New (first-time) Job Postings in December 2020 represented 35 percent of Available Job Postings, a decreasing share when compared to previous months, as employers are posting fewer new jobs.
The new chart below, Top 10 Most Advertised Job Postings by Occupational Category from December 2019 to December 2020, will show there was a sharp decrease in ad postings in May 2020. Occupations related to Sales and Related, Healthcare Practitioners and Technical, Office and Administrative Support, Transportation and Material Moving, Management and Installation, Maintenance and Repair, all saw a larger increase in ad postings when compared year-to-year as some of these occupations have less remote work flexibility and/or are considered essential work that faced a greater demand in the past few months. Another occupational group not listed in the year-to-year comparison chart below but also saw a rise in ad postings is Healthcare Support, especially for Nursing Assistants and Medical Assistants.
13 percent or about 8,000 of the Available Job Postings during the December reporting period fell under Computer and Mathematical Occupations. The share of Computer and Mathematical Occupations job postings have been decreasing since August 2020 and could be attributed to local hiring freezes or companies posting in other locations, since most of the occupations under this occupational category can offer more remote work opportunities/flexibility.
Another new chart below, the Top 10 Tech Jobs from Dec 2019 to Dec 2020, will also show a gradual decrease in tech job postings in the past few months.
According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin MSA reported an unemployment rate of 5.9% or 74,300 unemployed in November 2020, an increase of 11,300 people unemployed when compared to the previous month of October 2020. When compared to November 2019, there are 42,500 more people unemployed this November. The unemployment rate was lower at 5.0% or 63,000 unemployed in October 2020. According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the top five unemployment claim industries in the Capital Area Workforce Development Area for December 2020 were in the following industries: full-service restaurants, temporary help services, food service contractors, limited-service restaurants, and hotels and motels, except casino hotels. In the Rural Capital Area Workforce Development Area, the top five unemployment claim industries were in school and employee bus transportation, food service contractors, full-service restaurants, temporary help services, and limited-service restaurants.
The top 5 New (first-time) Job Postings in December 2020 were for Software Developers-Applications, Sales Representatives-Wholesale and Manufacturing, Registered Nurses, Managers, All Other, and Retail Salespersons.
Employers such as Ascension Health, The University of Texas, Hospital Corporation of America, IBM, Baylor Scott & White Health, and Anthem Blue Cross had the most New (first-time) Job Postings in December 2020.
More jobs ahead. Companies have recently announced new relocation or expansion plans in the Austin MSA, representing a total of about 5,450 jobs. Volcon (Irvine, CA), Oracle (Redwood City, CA), Momentum Extraction (Denver, CO), The Boring Company (Hawthorn, CA), and Athlete Performance Solutions (Sunrise Beach, TX) are the companies that have announced new location plans, creating 2,250 new jobs in Austin. The expansion list representing 3,200 new jobs includes Aceable, Amazon San Marcos Fulfillment Center, Fresh Texas, Giddy, Revenue Cycle, Self Financial, Tata Consultancy Services, Uhnder, Warm Audio, and Whole Foods Market.

The data for December 2020 would be the sum of all posted ads from November 14, 2020 to December 13, 2020. This reference period is aligned to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) unemployment job search time period to provide a more accurate comparison of labor supply and labor demand.
