Insights

Due to a comprehensive revision of the HWOL Index and HWOL Data Series, there will be changes in the volume as a result of this revision. The majority of the change in volume was caused by the removal of the bulk of the anonymous ads. Please note that the HWOL Data Series has been revised back to January 2015.

Job Postings measured in this report refers to the employers who are actively advertising online, it is not a representation of Job Openings, which measures all positions that are open (not filled) on the last business day of the month.
There were approximately 55,800 Available Job Postings during the August 2020 monthly reporting period, an increase of 3,600 postings compared to the previous month. There were 25,400 New (first-time) Job Postings in August 2020, representing 46 percent of Available Job Postings.
16 percent or about 9,200 of the Available Job Postings during the August reporting period fell under Computer and Mathematical Occupations. There were 3,600 New (first-time) Job Postings for Computer and Mathematical Occupations, most were for Software Developers-Applications.
According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin MSA reported an unemployment rate of 6.7% or 82,000 unemployed in July 2020, a decrease of 6,700 people unemployed when compared to the previous month of June 2020. When compared to July 2019, there are 45,600 more people unemployed this July. The unemployment rate was at a higher 7.3% or 88,600 unemployed in June 2020. The current civilian labor force for the Austin MSA in July 2020 is 1,225,100, an increase of 10,000 when compared to June 2020.
The top 5 New (first-time) Job Postings in August 2020 were for Software Developers-Applications, Sales Representatives-Wholesale and Manufacturing, Retail Salespersons, Customer Service Representatives and Managers-All Others.
Employers such as Ascension Health, The University of Texas, HEB, Lowe's Companies, Inc. and Amazon had the most New (first-time) Job Postings. The postings for Drivers/Sales Workers, which pays an hourly wage of $11.07, have doubled to 465 since March 2020 due to demand for delivery services and is now one of the Top 25 Available Job Postings.
More jobs ahead. Companies have recently announced new relocation or expansion plans in the Austin MSA, representing a total of about 1,800 jobs. BAE Systems (Arlington, VA) and DanceFight (Birmingham, MI) are the companies that have announced new location plans, creating 720 new jobs in Austin. The expansion list includes Wilder Systems, US Farathane, Unity Technologies, Tata Consultancy Services, SpyCloud, Software Advice, Social Solutions, Formaspace Technical Furniture, Fetch Package, Aspiriant, Acutronic Aerospace Components Division, Auctane (ShipStation/ShippingEasy) and Abaco Systems.

The data for August 2020 would be the sum of all posted ads from July 14, 2020 to August 13, 2020. This reference period is aligned to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) unemployment job search time period to provide a more accurate comparison of labor supply and labor demand.
