Insights

Due to a comprehensive revision of the HWOL Index and HWOL Data Series, there will be changes in the volume as a result of this revision. The majority of the volume change was caused by the removal of the bulk of the anonymous ads. Please note that the HWOL Data Series has been revised back to January 2015.

Job Postings measured in this report refers to the employers who are actively advertising online, it is not a representation of Job Openings, which measures all positions that are open (not filled) on the last business day of the month.
There were approximately 79,600 Available Job Postings during the April 2021 monthly reporting period, an increase of 12,000 postings compared to the previous month. There were 29,400 New (first-time) Job Postings, an increase of 4,600 postings compared to March 2021. New (first-time) Job Postings in April 2021 represented 37 percent of all Available Job Postings.
28 percent or 21,800 of the Available Job Postings during the April 2021 reporting period fell under both the Computer and Mathematical Occupations and Management Occupations. The number of Computer and Mathematical postings started to increase in February 2021, after a gradual decline since August 2020 and is now close to the levels before the pandemic.
According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin MSA reported an unemployment rate of 5.3% or 67,400 unemployed in March 2021, a decrease of 3,000 people unemployed when compared to the previous month of February 2021. The unemployment rate was higher at 5.6% or 70,400 unemployed in February 2021. In March 2020, the number of people unemployed then was at 47,000, with an unemployment rate of 3.8%, and this was when we saw businesses start to close due to the pandemic. The number of Available Job Postings in April 2021 is slightly over 12,000 more than the number of unemployed for March 2021 in the Austin MSA.
The top 5 New (first-time) Job Postings in April 2021 were for Software Developers-Applications, Sales Representatives-Wholesale and Manufacturing, Registered Nurses, Managers-All Others, and Retail Salespersons.
More jobs ahead. Since the start of this year, the Austin metro region has seen 13 Californian companies make new relocation announcements here, representing about 1,100 jobs. A total of 2,350 jobs were announced through new relocation or expansion plans in the Austin MSA for April 2021. Blockcap (Las Vegas, NV), BSU (Ithaca, NY), City Shoppe (Portland, OR), Farmstead (Burlingame, CA), Flex Logix Technologies (Mountain View, CA), Invzbl (Charlotte, NC), Kirkland & Ellis (Chicago, IL), Markaaz (Los Angeles, CA), MilkRun (Portland, OR), Parallel (Atlanta, GA), TripActions (Palo Alto, CA) and WayFair (Boston, MA) are the companies that have announced new location plans, creating 1,190 new jobs in Austin. The expansion list representing 1,150 new jobs, includes Allegiant, Arrive Logistics, Atmosphere, Canteen Spirits, Deloitte, GT Distributors, Living Security, Move Solutions, Restore Hyper Wellness, Scandinavian Spaces, Serenity Kids, U.S. Army Futures Command, and Zebra.
