  • NOTE: During 2019, The Conference Board Help Wanted OnLine® (HWOL) program changed its data source (such as adding Glassdoor and Indeed). While the HWOL series has maintained consistency in its methodology, the differences between the two data sources will impact the July 2019 report henceforth.

  • Job Postings measured in this report refers to the employers who are actively advertising online, it is not a representation of Job Openings, which measures all positions that are open (not filled) on the last business day of the month.

  • There were approximately 63,400 Available Job Postings during the April 2020 monthly reporting period, an decrease of 1,300 postings compared to the previous month. New Job Postings fell from 28,300 in March 2020 to 23,800 in April 2020.

  • 20 percent or about 12,800 of the Available Job Postings during the April reporting period fell under Computer and Mathematical Occupations followed by Management Occupations which represents about 13 percent or 8,300 of postings. STEM occupations account for over 11% of all jobs in the Austin MSA, making Austin the 6th most concentrated in STEM among large U.S. metros.

  • According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin MSA reported an unemployment rate of 12.2% or 138,100 unemployed in April 2020, an increase of 90,700 unemployed people when compared to the previous month. The unemployment rate was 3.8% or 47,400 unemployed in March 2020. The current civilian labor force for the Austin MSA in April 2020 is 1,132,900, a decrease of 103,100 when compared to March 2020. The Leisure and Hospitality industry shrunk the most by 45.6% followed by Other Services which saw a decrease of 28.9% and this includes occupations related to Repair and Maintenance, Personal and Laundry Services, Religious Organizations and Private Households.

  • According to Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, "Workers with college degrees and those earning $60,000 or more are far more likely to be in jobs for which remote working is an option than those without a degree or earnings less than $60,000. Austin has the highest percentage (48 percent) of workers with a remote working option; Dallas (42 percent) and Houston (40 percent) are just behind." Approximately 38 percent of full-time workers in Texas hold remote-compatible jobs. There are about 600 "Work from Home" New Job Postings in April 2020 and most are occupations related to Computer and Mathematical, Management, Sales and Related, Business and Financial Operations and Office and Administrative Support.

  • More jobs ahead. Companies have recently announced new relocation or expansion plans in the Austin MSA, representing about 270 jobs. Airbrake Technologies and Airtable are the San Francisco companies that have announced new location plans in Austin. The expansion list includes SourceDay, Ontic Technologies, Liveoak Technologies, Literati, DLA Piper, Coder Technologies, CareStarter, Advanced Micro Devices, Amazon Fulfillment Center and AlertMedia.
