Insights

Burning Glass made improvements to more efficiently identify expired job postings and this resulted in fewer "available jobs" before stabilizing at a new level as of January 23, 2022. Available job postings historically did not change. The time series experienced a one-time downward shift. This is a change due to a better methodology.
Job Postings measured in this report refer to the employers who are actively advertising online, it is not a representation of Job Openings, which measures all positions that are open (not filled) on the last business day of the month.
There were approximately 85,400 available job postings during the April 2022 monthly reporting period. There were 34,000 New (first-time) Job Postings. New (first-time) Job Postings in April 2022 represented 40 percent of all Available Job Postings and this is an increase when compared to the previous month as employers are posting more new (first-time) jobs in the region.
15 percent or 12,900 of all Available Job Postings during the April 2022 reporting period fell under Management Occupations while 12,400 Available Job Postings fell under Computer and Mathematical Occupations, showing continued strong demand for experienced or senior talent and tech talent in our region. For the past eight months, Computer and Mathematical postings have fallen behind the Management occupational group as employers post open Computer and Mathematical jobs outside our market because there are more opportunities to work remotely with these occupations. Some companies are also posting more Computer and Mathematical job ads in our region which may account for the slight increase in these ads when compared to the previous month.
Recently released data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) for the Austin MSA shows that the annual median wages for Educational Instruction and Library Occupations, Healthcare Practitioners and Technical Occupations, Construction and Extraction Occupations, Computer and Mathematical Occupations, and Legal Occupations saw the highest year-to-year growth. The change is not yet reflected in the job postings below as Burning Glass has yet to update its information.
There are currently about 5,900 postings indicating vaccination requirements or mentions, 600 more when compared to the previous month of March 2022. This could also be due to more companies having firmer plans for employees returning to the office or workplace.
There were 6,200 postings that offered "signing bonuses", an increase of 100 more postings when compared to the previous month. Registered Nurses and Software Developers are the top two occupations that would see more signing bonuses offered in their job postings
37 percent or 31,000 of Available Job Postings pay an annual median wage between $30,000 to $65,000. Of these, 59 percent or 18,200 will require a high school diploma as the entry-level education, and 16 percent or 4,700 will require a bachelor's degree.
There are about 990 internship positions posted, in-person or remote, 60 more postings than the previous month. The top two companies with the most postings are semiconductor industry-related, Advanced Micro Devices and Inc., Intel Corporation, and are followed by state agencies like the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Department of Transportation.
According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin MSA reported the lowest unemployment rate in the state, at 2.7% in March 2022. The total number of unemployed in the Austin MSA is about 36,600.
More jobs ahead. In April 2022, the Austin metro region saw a total of about 377 jobs announced through new relocation or expansion plans. Decide (St. Louis, MO), Ownwell (Santa Monica, CA), Piper Sandler (Minneapolis, MN), Snap Inc. (Santa Monica, CA), and Torque Lifestyle Brands (Wheat Ridge, CO) are the companies that have announced new location plans, creating about 115 new jobs in Austin. The expansion list representing 262 jobs, includes Diligent Robotics, Greater Austin Merchants Cooperative Association, Mainsail Partners, Mill Scale Metal Works, MoboTrex, Revival Cycles, Seon, SonarSource, and Trace.
