Transportation and its contingency on funding

Posted on 09/12/2017 by Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce

Transportation in Austin has been in the news a lot over the past five years—a plan to improve mobility on I-35 was created, global headlines covered an epic showdown over rideshare regulations, and Texas voters approved state Prop 1 and Prop 7 to improve transportation in the Central Texas region.

Yet, from the driver and passenger seat of our cars, we are reminded of just how little things in the transportation world have metamorphosed. Mostly because of our commute; if you are one of the more than 350,000 workers who live outside of the Austin city limits, you are more than familiar with this scenario. But as Austin continues to swell in population due to job growth, it’s no surprise that congestion woes—both the time and distance of commutes—have not only become longer but are a consistent challenge for the region.

Join the Greater Austin Chamber as we host Making Central Texas Work!, on October 30, and explore the future of mobility planning and its function to building an effective region.

The second of three engaging panel discussions, Funding the Plan, will focus on the trajectory of transportation projects in the Central Texas region and their contingency on a reliable funding source.

Texas lawmakers, including Texas State Representative Celia Israel (D-Austin); Commissioner Will Conley of Hays County Precinct 3; Commissioner Kevin Wolff of Bexar County Precinct 3; and Ray Wilkerson, Chairman of the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority, will discuss the role of transportation funding in planning, development, design, construction, and maintenance of the Central Texas region transportation system.

The panel discussion will be moderated by Texas State Senator Kirk Watson (D-Austin).

The event will be held at the JW Marriott. Tickets are $65 for members; $75 at the door and for non-members.
