To Work or Not To Work? The Growing Child Care Dilemma Faced by Families and Employers

Posted on 09/19/2017 by Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce

The workforce of Central Texas represents one of the most educated talent pools in the country. 43 percent of adults have at least a bachelor’s degree in the Austin MSA, compared to 30 percent nationally, and the region benefits from over 50 colleges and universities with over 400,000 enrolled students. These factors alone rank Austin in the top 10 with other large metros. But this growing workforce also includes another variable—children.

It’s no coincidence that more families are moving to Austin. Recently, Austin was listed as the Best Place to Live by the U.S. News and World Report and as one of four metro areas to achieve all-inclusive growth. In 2016, the city welcomed 159 people per day due to the surge of technology jobs. This increase in population is not only a concern of home builders and their struggle to keep up with demand but businesses as well.

But being a new parent in Austin can be challenging. Quality child care centers have long waiting lists, the issue of affordability affects the teacher supply, and working parents frequently have to ponder the difficult choices of either working or staying home.

Join the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, as we host To Work or Not To Work? The Growing Child Care Dilemma Faced by Families and Employers, on November 3 from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m.
