Austin A-List Award Spotlight: Apptronik, Inc - 2018 Emerging Winner

Posted on 03/01/2019 by Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce

Every year, the Austin Chamber and SXSW host the Austin A-List Awards, which celebrates and promotes Austin’s top innovative, homegrown companies and leaders. The event highlights both tech and non-tech companies.

Austin is home to a unique and collaborative business community. We are working to highlighting them in a variety of ways including through a commitment to make A-List an enduring honor by staying in touch with and highlighting our winners throughout the year.

As we approach this year’s Austin A-List Awards on May 23 at ACL Live @ the Moody Theater, we are looking each week at a different 2018 winner.

When selecting winners, our judges evaluate nominees on the following criteria:

Innovation: How novel/innovative is the company’s core idea?
Achievability: How achievable/practical is the idea? Can it be delivered?
Sustainability: Is the company sourcing properly with thoughts on its impact to the environment?
Growth: Will the company scale over time?
Leadership: Does the company have the right leadership to execute?

2018 Emerging Winner: Apptronik, Inc

CEO Bill Welch shares an update on how Apptronik, Inc has progressed since winning in 2018:

Apptronik continues to grow! We added five new employees (now 16 total) and doubled our prior year revenue. Work on our robotic platforms (human exoskeleton and two-legged walking robot) are in advanced development and receiving high praise for design, innovation, and functionality. Discoveries made while developing these platforms have led to new innovations in robotic arm technology that will transform the logistics industry. After three years of bootstrapping operations, we recently closed our first round of outside investment (a $500K pre-seed round) to support initial product development efforts. We’re now in negotiations with a private equity investor on an eight-digit round of funding to complete design, testing, manufacturing, and sales of the new arm technology. We plan to double our workforce over the next 12-18 months with primary focus on hiring mechanical, electrical, and software engineers.
